Colonia del Sacramento is the oldest city in Uruguay and capital of the Department of Colonia. Tourists visiting this stunning town will surely be transformed back in time, as this colonial town, has marvelous narrow cobble stoned streets flanked by beautiful whitewashed Portuguese style houses and buildings. This lovely town was founded by the Portuguese in 1680, which served as a popular port town and today Colonia, is better known as the resort town, which is recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995.
The popular attractions of Colonia include El Faro, which is an 1857 built lighthouse from the remains of Convento de San Francisco. Puerta de la Ciudadela is a drawbridge built in 1745, a place worth visiting. Bastion del Carmen, Plaza de Toros, Museo Portugues and Museo Espanol are places of interest in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay.
