Currently the commercial and financial capital of Sri Lanka ever since the administrative capital was shifted to a neighboring suburb east of the city, Colombo is still the largest city in the country. Very busy and vibrant, featuring a mixture of modern life, colonial buildings and ruins, Colombo is home to a large harbor which is strategically positioned on the East-West sea trade routes. Comprising of many canal and the Beira Lake situated in the heart of Colombo, the cityscape is generally weaved around the Kelani River delta.
An extensive public transport system based on buses fulfills local transportation requirements of Colombo, and which is soon to be complimented by a Mass Rapid Transit railway system. Served by the Bandaranaike International Airport offering scheduled flights to/from all major destinations around the globe, Colombo is an excellent stopover on your way to Singapore. Ferry services are also available to/from Tuticorin in India for passengers wanting to take the sea route to get into Colombo City.
