Detail InformationEdit

The Schlierbach Cistercian Monastery, one of Central Europe’s oldest monasteries, is a Baroque jewel with a difference.
The Cistercian Monastery is a spiritual, cultural and artistic center and a true treat for all senses. The splendid interiors are best explored within a guided tour.
The Monastery is not only popular for its private glass painting workshop but also for the Schlierbach Cheese Specialties that age behind the convent’s walls.
In 1355, Cistercian nuns settled down at the Castle of Schlierbach, having got the instruction to pray for the salvation of founder Eberhard V of Wallsee. The 16th century brought about the Protestant Reformation and this was the end of monastic life in Schlierbach. In 1620, Cistercian monks moved to Schlierbach to resume regular monastic life.
In the 17th and 18th century, there have been substantial reconstructions of the church and the monastery, carried out by the Upper Italian Carlone family of artists. The sumptuous Baroque results of their building activities can still be marvelled at Schlierbach today. Pride of place is given to the library, holding some 12,000 volumes, to the magnificent collegiate church in Baroque style and to the lovely “”Bernardi”” festivity hall.
