Chicxulub may be a city, and encompassing municipality of an equivalent name, within the Mexican state of Yucatán.At the census of 2005, the city had a population of five,052 people.Chicxulub is most known for being close to the geographic center of the Chicxulub crater, a bearing crater discovered by geologists on the Yucatán earth and increasing into the ocean.
It was created by the impact of Associate in Nursing asteroid or estraterrestrial body some sixty five million years past which can have caused the Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction event. The coastal village (or puerto) of Chicxulub, vi kilometer east of the closest city, Progreso, lies nearly precisely on the geographic center of the crater.The name Chicxulub is Yucatec Maya language, wherever ch’ic suggests that “flea” or “tick”, and xulub’ suggests that “devil, demon, or horns”.
