Chettinad is situated in the southern part of TamilNadu in the district of Sivaganga. The name of Chettinad comes from the famous Nattukottai Chettiar community who inhabit this region. They are well known for the background in banking and business. Though many members of this community had earlier migrated to different Southeast Asian countries presently many members of this community are also settled in many western countries as well. Chettinad is an interesting place to travel to whether you are an antiquarian or a tourist. Chettinad is famous as the land of Chettiars, the wealthiest merchant families in Tamil Nadu. Chettinad is famous for its tourist attractions -the traditional palaces and mansions that will help one to reconstruct the simple yet classy life of the wealthy Chettiar community of Tamil Nadu. Some of the interesting tourist attractions in Chettinad are the museums-the Kamban Mani Mandapam and the Kaviarsar Kannadhasan Mani Mandapam, both built in honor of late poet-laureates.

By Air : The nearest airport to Chettinad is at Madurai, which is about 90 km away from the city center. Taxi facilities are available from airport to city. It will cost around Rs. 1300. Madurai offers direct regular flights to Chennai.

By Train : The major railway station nearby to Chettinad is located at Karaikudi. This is in the main rail route to Chennai. Regular trains are available to Chennai.

By BUS : Many buses, state owned and private, connect chettinad with other major cities in Tamil Nadu. Karaikudi is placed in the national Highway and Chettinad is well connected by road through Karaikudi. It is connected with Madurai, Chennai, Tanjore and Trichy.

Bhogi ; Venue:  N.A. ; Period :  N.A. ; Details:  Bhogi to rid the society of evil. People clean up their houses of all the junk that they have accumulated in the past year. All the waste stuff is burnt. Houses are freshly painted. Farm animals are bathed and decorated with colored powders and paint.

Pongal ; Venue:  N.A. ; Period :  N.A. ; Details:  Pongal is celebrated on the first day of the Tamil month of Thai. It is considered to be an auspicious month. The Sun God is worshipped. In rural areas, people gather in front of their houses and cook pongal in new pots. Stoves are made with clay and wood is used as fuel. When the pongal is almost made, everybody shouts in ecstasy pongal o pongal. When milk is boiled, if it overflows, it is believed to be a sign of a prosperous agricultural during the coming season.

Mattu Pongal ; Venue:  N.A. ; Period :  January 15, ; Details:  Mattu Pongal The next day January 15, is the day for farm animals especially the bulls. Most farmers still use them to plough and till the land for irrigation. The farmer would find it difficult to survive without the bull. Bulls, cows and other farm animals are worshipped on this day. Bull fights or Manju Virattu also takes place on this day. These fights are also called Jalli Kettu. Sirawayal, a village near Pillayarpatti is known for its fierce bull fight during Mattu Pongal.
