Having a coastline of 15 kms, the Cherai beach is different from many beaches in the sense that it is very clean and shallow and thus, ideal for the purpose of swimming and sunbathing. Being so near from the main Kochi city, an important commercial capital of Kerala, the Cherai beach is an enticing option for anybody who wants to get away from the din of city life momentarily.Thus, you will find many locals and tourists picnicking on the sandy shores of the beach, which stands surrounded by tall coconut trees and green paddy fields. Cherai beach is the golden beach of Kerala and is also famous by the name of ‘Princess of the Queen of the Arabian Sea’. The main beach area has been newly added with the 400 meters long walkway. The high mask lamps along the edges of the walkway make the Cherai beach enjoyable even during the night. Apart from that, the beach is also well known for its fresh & delicious seafood.

Cherai beach is a long stretch beach with beautiful sand and coconut trees. Cherai has played an important role in the history of modern Kerala by becoming the birthplace of two prominent political personsages of modern Kerala – Mathai Manjooran and Sahodaran Ayyappan.The place is a unique combination of sea and backwaters rimmed by lush green coconut palms and paddy fields. The 15 km long golden beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Kerala.Part of the island of Vypin and blessed with a unique blend of sea and backwater, Cherai is an exotic mixture of nature, culture and history. It is a beautiful village near Kochi in India.Cherai Beach is noted for its scenic beauty.Cherai Cherai is a region in the island of Vypin, a suburb of the city of Kochi, in the state of Kerala, India. Taxi : After reaching Cochin, you can hire a cab, taxi, bus or auto-rickshaw to reach here.

BUS : Overnight buses are available from Bangalore (500 km, 11 hours, Rs 900 for AC Volvo) and Chennai (700 km, 12 hours, Rs 1,200 for AC Volvo).

Train : The Nearest railway station is at Ernakulam, situated about 40 km away.

Air : The Cochin International Airport is located 20 kms away.

Others : Autorickshaw : This is a cheap method of transport between attractions. You can find an auto stand at almost every bus stop, and at important places near junctions and residential areas. Make sure you agree on a fare with the driver before the journey. The govt fixed rates starts at Rs 10 for the first 1.25 km and Rs 6 per km thereafter with a premium of 15% at night (7PM-6AM).
Ferry : Near Vypeen Island accessible by boat. 30 minutes, journey from Ernakulam.

  • Keep your cell phone in your laguage or hand out other person before going in water.
  • Kochi is infamous for mosquitoes, due to presence of large water bodies across the city. Make sure any room you book, has mosquito repellents or at least a mosquito net. Its always better to have any anti-mosquito creams or spice oil extracts like lemongrass oil to ward off mosquito bites.
  • Public smoking bans are strictly enforced in the city more so than in other regions. The High Court of Kerala has decreed a public smoking ban across the state. Smoking on the roadside, in shopping complexes, restaurants, and parks is illegal and police can charge Rs 500-1,000 for breaches.
