Chenega could be a census-designated place (CDP) on Evans Island within the Valdez-Cordova Census space within the U.S. State of Alaska. Situated in blue blood William Sound, the CDP consists of the Chugach Alutiiq village of Chenega Bay, that was established solely when the nice Friday Earthquake destroyed the initial community on Chenega Island to the north. As of the 2010 census, the population of the CDP was seventy six, for the most part Alaska Natives.
The original village of Chenega, situated on Chenega Island, was destroyed in 1964 by a wave from the nice Friday Earthquake, that killed a 3rd of the sixty eight folks that then lived there. Some residents affected into a exile camp; differents affected to other cities. In 1982, one family affected to Evans Island and between 1984-1991 regarding twenty six different families migrated to the new location, currently known as Chenega Bay.
Former and current Chenega residents gathered every Christian holy day to recollect the dead of Chenega. On the twenty fifth Christian holy day when the earthquake, in 1989, the oiler Exxon port ran beached in blue blood William Sound, inflicting associate oil spill that once more wasted Chenega and different places round the space economically.
