With the Southern Kansas Railroad locating a division headquarters in Chanute, the town began to flourish. In 1887, Chanute boasted a ascent in flourmills, grain elevators, banks, drug and hardware stores, and gas. In 1903, the town of Chanute established the electrical utility, and within the years to follow, established the gas, water, wastewater, and refuse utilities. Chanute is one amongst solely a couple of remaining full-service cities within the State of Kansas.
