Champaner is a city with a rich history and it is located in the state of Gujarat. The city was also the capital of the state for a small period. The city was founded during the Chavda Kingdom. It has been in existence since the 8th century and it is a relatively old city. The city is famous for a hill fort that is located above the city. This fort is called the Pavagadh and it is a well known and important tourist destination. The main attraction for tourists who travel to the city of Champaner is the archeological park that is located in the city. This park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site and it was given this status in the year 2004. The Jama Masjid that is located in the city is one of the finest monuments in the state and was built by the Sultan Begada. The mosque has a high central dome and it has 172 pillars in total. Some of the other mosques are Nagina Masjid, Kewada Masjid and Shehar ki Masjid. The award winning film Lagaan which was nominated for the Oscars was set in the city of Champaner. There are many ruins of forts, tombs, gardens and other buildings that you can visit in the place.

HistoryEdit

The historical monuments at Champaner consist of a series of fortifications, some of which originate on the hill top and end on the plains. The fortification is consisted of massive sandstones with intermediate bastions with beautiful balconies. Out of the massive ruins, five mosques are still in good condition. The most important among them is the Jama Masjid which is located 50 east of the royal enclosure. The structures represent a perfect blend of Hindu-Moslem architecture, mainly in the Great Mosque (Jami Masjid), which was a model for later mosque architecture in India. This special style comes from the significant period of regional sultanates.

By Air : The Vadodara airport is the nearest airport to the city. Situated at a distance of 42 kilometres from the place, Vadodara has several domestic flights connecting with major Indian cities. Tourists can take a taxi from the airport to the desired destination.

By Train : The Champaner railway station is a small railway station which is located on the Godhara to Vadodara line. It does not have a frequent connectivity with the city. Vadodara railway station, at a distance of 53 kilometres from the city is a big railway station which has good connectivity with other cities of India.

By BUS : State transport buses and private luxury coaches are available to reach Champaner (Pavagadh) from various cities of Gujarat. There are also frequent buses from Vadodara to Pavagadh that takes 1-1 1/2 hours.

By Taxi : Champaner is well connected by a road network and national Highway 72. The tourist can reach to Champaner by taxi. The normal Indian taxi charges of Rupees 8 to 20 will be charged for each km.
