Badrinath

India /Uttarakhand /Chamoli /Badrinath

Badrinath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand is sandwiched between Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, naturally bestowed with pristine surroundings. One among the most sought after pilgrim centres in the Indian subcontinent, Badrinath is beautifully set in the backdrop of the colossal Neelkanth mountain peak. The term Badrinath is a derivative of badri, which means the place where beries grow abundantly. A place, which holds so many myths and legends, Badrinath acquires predominance in the travel itinerary of a pilgrim. The popular belief is that Badarinath was the domain of Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu managed to unseat Shiva from here to Kedarnath. Another belief is that when Ganga made her descend to earth she split up in to twelve streams and one among the channels, Alakananda felt on Kedarnath. Sanctity and holiness of Badrinath festooned it with accolades since from the Vedic ages. It proffers the awesome beauty of the snow clad mountain peaks and the surging landscapes of the Garhwal region. It is a scenic place with picture book sceneries, undulating peaks, sacred ponds and water bodies, Badrinath makes the visitor spellbound with its unparalleled gorgeousness. This majestic look of Badrinath is attributed much by the presence of the magnificent rivers Rishi Ganga and Alaknanda. Badrinath is one of the Panch Badris’. The temple of Shri Badrinathji is at Badrinath near the banks of the Alaknanda river, dates back to the vedic times. Situated at an altitude of 3133 mts., the present temple is believed to have been built by Adi Guru Shankracharya – an 8th century’s philosopher-saint, who also established a ‘math’ here. Also known as ‘Vishal Badri’.The revered shrine is still alive with myriad legends from mythology. Its sanctity is emphasised in the ancient scriptures as there are many sacred spots of pilgrimage in the heavens , earth and the nether world ,but there has been none equal to badri , nor shall there be. Legend has it when the ganga was requested to descend to earth to help the suffering humanity, the earth was unable to withstand the force of its descent . therefore the mighty ganga was split into twelve holy channesl.

Badami

India /Karnataka /Bagalkot /Badami

Badami once a royal capital of the Chalukyas is now a sleepy town in Bagalkot district of Karnataka. The town was known as Vatapi previously. It is settled in a valley at the base of a furrowed, red arenaceous rock that rings Agastya lake. Badami is a place which is full of cave temples, entryways, fortresses and cave. The ancient Chalukyas of Badami are accredited with some of the best customs of Dravidian architecture admitting an observational fuse of older South Indian temple construction and ornamentation and the Nagara mode of North India. This beautiful blend of south and north passed on into the Dravidian temple building pattern. Badami is the site of the 6th-7th century Brahmanical and Jain cave temples. The temples are cut out of solid rock with elaborate interior decorations that speak volumes of art and architecture of that period. There are 4 cave temples connected with each other with a flight of stairs. People of Badami speak Kannada, Hindi and English. Their attire is traditional Indian cotton wear. It is a place for tourists who are interested in temples, art and architecture. The Best Season to visit Badami is between September and February. HistoryEdit

Ajmer history began when Raja Ajai Pal Chauhan established his capital in this part of Rajasthan. Known as Ajaimeru in the past Raja Ajai Pal’s bastion was rechristened as Ajmer in the later years. The sacred town of Ajmer boasts of its rich history. This place belonged to the mighty Chauhan Dynasty of Rajputs who are still remembered for building in the 7th century Taragarh, the first ever hill fort in the country. The place was also under the rule of the great Hindu king Raja Prithvi Chauhan till he got defeated in 1192. In 1193 defeating Prithwiraj Chauhan, Gajni’s Mohhammad Ghori took the possession of the town. From that time the struggle between the Mughals and the Rujputs started for the control of the fort. The town was completely shattered when Taimur attacked it suddenly.
The year 1556 witnessed the shift of power and for the first time, the holy town came under the rule of the great Mughal Emperor Akbar who made it his headquarter in Rajasthan. He built a magnificient fort which still attracts the visitors. Many memorials of Shahjahan also can be seen here. Aurangzeb captured the Mughal throne in 1659 after defeating his brothers. Later it was taken over by the Scindhia dynasty. In 1818 it went to the British rulers. Ajmer might have lost its old charm and certainly not a pleasant town as it was during 17th century but today it stands for a balanced equilibrium of Hindu and Muslim culture.
