HistoryEdit

Jaipur dates back to the year 1727 when the city was discovered by the then king, Maharaja Jai Singh II. The king shifted his capital to Jaipur from Amber due to the increase in population and reduction in the water levels. Jaipur prides itself on being the first planned city in the country as Maharaja Jai Singh II was deeply interested in the designing and construction of the city. Since the Marathas were constantly attacking and trying to take a reign over the city, the king was very skeptical about the security of Jaipur. Thus, with the assistance of Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a Brahmin scholar of Bengal, Maharaja Jai Singh II started the construction of Jaipur in 1727. It took around 4 years to build the entire city and huge buttressing of walls was created to ensure the safety. Constructed on the pattern of Shilpa Shastra, the Indian Architecture, the city of Jaipur was divided in nine blocks wherein there were two state buildings and palaces. The rest of the seven blocks were given for the public use. The city was referred to as ‘pink city’ only in the year 1853, when the whole city was painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales.

HistoryEdit

Lucknow, the Nawabi city of Uttar Pradesh was founded in the 13th century AD. Though historians claim the city to have been a part of the ancient Suryavanshi dynasty, not much evidence has been gathered. During the year 1350 AD, the city was under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate which further went into the hands of the Mughals, the Nawabs of Awadh, the East India Company and finally the British. The last Nawab of Oudh to have ruled the city was Nawab Asadf-ud-daula. He made Lucknow his capital and constructed various monuments in order to modernize the look of the city. British gained control over Lucknow in 1854, under the generalship of Lord Dalhousie. The city became the capital of the present day Uttar Pradesh after India’s independence in the year 1947.

HistoryEdit

Haridwar is the land that was sanctified by the footprints of the Lord. Associated with both Shiva and Vishnu, it is believed to have been the place where Sati (Shiva’s consort) consigned herself to the sacrificial fire. The terrible ‘Tandava’ (dance of destruction) performed by Shiva in grief led to Vishnu dismembering Sati’s body, with the different parts scattering across India. Besides its pre-eminence in Hindu texts, Haridwar’s claim to fame is its mention by the Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang and its invasion by the plundering troops of Timur Lame.

Dehradun is known to have been part of the garhwal region since times unknown (except for the brief interlude at Rohilla). Various mythological stories connect Dehradun to have been a part of Ramayana. It is a popular belief that Rama and Lakshmana had come to this town for penance. The Pandavas also are believed to have sojourn here for rest. Various rock inscription associate Dehradun to Emperor Asoka , who ruled in the 1st century B.C. At certain time or the other, Dehradun has been under the rule of Sikhs, Mughals and the Gorkhas. While the Sikhs ruled here from 1675-1699, the area went into the control of the Gurkhas in the year 1803, making it a province of Nepal. The presenttown of Dehradun, was annexed by the British during the Gurkha War, after which a treaty was signed between the British and the Kingdom of Nepal . Thus, Dehradun came under the British crown and started to gain back its lost glory. The ‘Municipality of Dehradun’ was established in 1867 and in the 1900, Dehradun got its first railroad.

HistoryEdit

Chittorgarh has a beautiful history associated with it. The city had been one of the most powerful cities in the Rajput kingdom and was the seat of the Sisodia kings in the 8th century, who received the town as a gift after the king’s marriage to the last Solanki princess. From the 8th century to the 16th the town was ruled by the Bappa Rawal’s descendants. The history of Chittorgarh revolves mainly around the tales of Rani Padmini. History has it that Alauddin Khilji, the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate in 1303, was impressed by her beauty and wanted to meet her. He signed a pact with Rani Padmini’s husband Ratan Singh that if he let him meet his wife then he won’t attack his kingdom. However, after seeing her he changed his plan and prepared to attack the kingdom in order to gain control over both the fort and the queen. However, the queen understood his intentions and committed Jauhar (burning oneself) along with all the womenfolk. The history of Chittorgarh is incomplete without the mention of Maharan Pratap Singh, who gave a very tough time to the Mughals. He confronted the Akbar’s Mughal army in 1576 at Haldighat. Though the battle ended in a deadlock, Maharan Pratap fought guerilla wars for the next 20 years, giving a tough time to the Mughals. He is a very popular king as he vowed not to sleep on bed, eat from metal utensils and nor live in palaces, in order to regain his pride. Even today, the Maharajas of Mewar keep a leaf below their utensils in order to continue this vow.

HistoryEdit

Hyderabad the capital of Andhra Pradesh, founded in the year 1591 by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah, the fifth sultan of Qutb Shahi dynasty, offers a fascinating panorama of the past, with richly mixed cultural and historical tradition spanning over 400 years. It is one of the fastest growing cities of India and has emerged as a strong industrial, commercial, technology center, gives a picture of glimpses of past splenders and the legacy of its old history. The history of Hyderabad begins with the establishment of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Quli Qutb Shah seized the reins of power from the Bahamani kingdom in 1512 and established the fortress city of Golconda. Inadequacy of water, and frequent epidemics of plague and cholera persuaded Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah to venture outward to establish new city with the Charminar at its centre and with four great roads fanning out four cardinal directions. Hyderabad’s fame, strategic location and Golconda’s legendary wealth attracted Aurangazeb who captured Golconda after a long seize in 1687.
