HistoryEdit

Jammu can be credited to Raja Jambu Lochan, who founded the city in the 14th century B.C. He was convinced Jammu to be a place of peace and tranquility after witnessing a lion and goat drinking water from the same place at the same time and then going their own way. The city was thus named as Jambu-Nagar, which was later changed into Jammu. The popular mythological epic, Mahabharta, also has mentions of Jammu. The excavations conducted near Akhnoor (20 kms from Jammu) confirms the city to have been a part of the Harappan civilization. Various remains have connected the evolution of the city to the Mauryan, Kushans and even the Gupta civilizations. Before coming under the reigns of the British, Jammu was ruled by the Mughals and Sikhs for sometime. The Erstwhile Sikh ruler, Maharaja Ranjit Singh ruled here during the 19th century. During the ruling of Gulab Singh, The British signed a treaty and declared him as the independent ruler of Jammu till independence.

HistoryEdit

Jodhpur, the golden city of Rajasthan, boasts of a history that goes back to the 1100 C.E, when the city was under the rule of the Gurjara-Pratihara Empire. The city was formally founded by Rao Jodha, a chief in the Rathore Clan of Rajputs, in the year 1459. He named the city and its surrounding area as Marwar. Rao Jodha made Jodhpur his capital, thus making the city an important trading hub of opium, silk, copper, date palms, coffee and sandals. The city came under the rule of Mughals and served as a fief. This was the time when Maharaja Jaswant Singh gained importance as a noteworthy general by the Mughals.During this time, the city also saw its maximum exposure, with Mughal art and architecture mixing styles with the traditional Rajasthani culture. During the year 1679, Aurangzeb confiscated the city. However, his death in 1707 marked the end of Mughal rule in Jodhpur and the city went back into the hands of the rightful Rajputana rulers.

Gwalior’s history is as fascinating as the attractions in the city, which can be traced back to the 8th century A.D. Gwalior was the under the rule of the Hunas in the 6th century. It further went in to the hands of Gurjar Prariharas of Kannauj who ruled here till 923 A.D. The throne subsequently went under the control of Kachwaha Rajputs in 10th century. The city came under the flag of the Delhu Sultanate in 1196, when Qutub-Uddin Aibak captured the city. His rule was followed by the ruling of Shams-ud-Altamash in 1232. The magnanimous Gwalior Fort was constructed by Raja Man Singh of Tomar dynasty in the 15th century. It was during the 15th century that a famous singing school was established here and the legendary musician Tansen attended this school. The Muslim ruled here till 1553 after which the city was captured by Vikramaditya, who later conquered the North India after defeating Akbar’s army at Agra in 1556. The British gained control of the city in 1780, after which it remained in their kitty. During the first mutiny of 1857, Gwalior was one of the most active domains. HistoryEdit

Dwarka is a mystical story. The city is believed to have been the capital of Lord Krishna, who established his capital on the bank of River Gomti Creek after he fled from Mathura, during his 17th battle with king of Magadh Desh. The Lord was succeeded by his great grandson, Vajranabh, who is known to have built all the holy temples in the city. The city was then called as ‘Trilok Nath’. Many Hindus believe that the temples at Dwarkaraj were built in one night with the assistance of spiritual powers. The original habitants of the area were Kabas and Modas. It is said that after the death of Lord Krishna, the ruling kings of Dwarka, the Yadavas indulged in a fight after being drunk, and the city then submerged into the sea. The city came under the rule of Kalas in the 2nd century, followed by the rule of Syrian king Sukkur Belium and during this time the city had drowned. In the 13th century the Rathods took over who ruled here for a long time. Dwarka was then part of Okhamandal. The city was declared as part of the Baroda district after India’s independence in 1947. The state was Gujarat was formed in 1961 and Dwarka was designated as one of its cities.
