HistoryEdit

Mysore is a corrupted version of “mysooru”, which is derived from the word “mahishur” or “Mahishasurana Ooru”, which means the town of Mahishasura in Kannada, the local language. Mysore has been associated with the Puranic story found in the Devi Bhagavatha. According to the story in the Devi Purana, Mysroe was ruled by the demon Kind Mahishasura. Mahishasura was a buffalo-headed monster. In response to the prayer by the Gods and Goddesses to save them from the demon, Goddess Parvathi, took birth as Chamundeshwari and killed the monster on top of the Chamundi hill near Mysore. Hence the hill and the city have the names Chamundi Hill and Mysore respectively.

HistoryEdit

Khajuraho is the historical city is believed to have been ruled by the Pratihara Kings of North India from 500 to 1300 C.E. Mythological beliefs claim the city to have been called as ‘Khajur-vahika’ or ‘Khajjarpura’ during the ancient times. The reason behind the name was sought to be the golden date palms that were then grown here. Various legends are allied with the foundation of the city. It is said that Hemavati, the widow daughter of the king gave up her dignity, in order to behold the respect for her father, to the Moon God who was attracted to her. Their union gave birth to a sage named Chandarateya who later became the founder of the Chandela dynasty, the dynasty who built the world heritage temples in Khajuraho. In another folklore, Chandravarman was born to Hemavati, a child widow after the moon God ravished her in human form. He later grew to become the first king of the Chandela dynasty. Not much of historical data is available about Khajuraho. This world heritage site earlier had 80 temples out of which only 22 stand today. However, most of them are in ruins today.

Maheshwar, the temple city, situated on the banks of the Narmada river where the pilgrims and holy men spent hours in silent meditation, the rows of poised women who carry glinting brass pots down to the holy, life giving river, and the commuter boat which cross and re-cross through the gushing waters are really wonderful experiences one cannot forget. With its tremendous temples and a salubrious climate, Maheshwar remains as a pleasant tourist destination, which can be visited any time of the year. HistoryEdit

Gopalpur-On-Sea is a 7-km-long stretch of beautiful beach and lies along the Bay of Bengal. What Gopalpur-On-Sea offers is a peaceful holiday, away from the hustle and bustle city life. It’s one of the most pristine and unpolluted beaches in India. This languorous beach with its coconut groves, casuarina, coppices and gentle sand dunes is deserted for miles. The beach derives its name from the Hindu god ‘Gopal’, one of the many names of Lord Krishna. Gopalpur also has an ancient, commercial port, now lying in ruins. There is an interesting history behind the Gopalpur On Sea. It was originally known as Paloura. It was the small fishing village on the coast of Orissa. Gopalpur beach has got its present name on the name of the 18th century temple of Lord Krishna or Gopala. It had earlier remained the important trading center. The British East India Company had constructed huge ware houses and godowns over their. According to the historical evidences it was once the wealthy town of the Kalinga Dynasty.
