HistoryEdit

Shimla dates back to the year 1819. Before that Shimla was under the rule of the Gurkhas. It was after the Gurkha War that the British soldiers founded a dense forest near the temple of Goddess Shyamala and gave it the name Shimla. But some historians contradict it saying that Shimla is derived from the word “Shyamalaya” meaning the blue house based on a house built by blue slate by a fakir. Shimla would not have been there if the Britishers had not discovered it. It was only in 1819, that the then Assistant Political Agent of Hill States, Lt. Ross built the first British residence- a wooden one.

Before the Maratha power ascended to the thrown, Pune had been ruled by an array of various rulers from different clans. Rashtrakutas in the 8th century AD, Yadava Empire of 9th century and the Mughals of Medieval times had contributed much to the cities all round development. The British gained control of this city after the hectic war of 1817 against the Marathas. Like all other major Indian cities, Pune also has shown its flourishing graph under the British rule who had utilized the cities resources in a wonderful way. They developed the city as their summer capital. A cradle of Indian renaissance during the pre-independence era, Pune had shown a massive participation of public in the freedom struggle. Pune would be remembered for ever as the birth place of some of the great reformers in the socio religious field. The most prominent of them all is Bal Gangadhara Tilak, who was popularly called as Lokmanya. Kochi

India /Kerala /Ernakulam /Kochi

Kochi (colonial name Cochin) is a vibrant city situated on the south-west coast of the Indian peninsula in the breathtakingly scenic and prosperous state of Kerala, hailed as ‘God’s Own Country’. Its strategic importance over the centuries is underlined by the sobriquet Queen of the Arabian Sea. Informally, Cochin is also referred to as the Gateway to Kerala. Rightfully sobriquet as ‘Queen of Arabian Sea’, it is one of the most popular beach destinations that offers stupendous monumental heritage, sandy beaches and stunning sunsets and sunrises. Kochi comprises gaggle of islands that are inter-linked by ferry. This lovely seaside city is flanked by the Western Ghats on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. Its proximity to the equator, the sea and the mountains provide a rich experience of a moderate equatorial climate. Strictly speaking, Cochin is a small town. But, Cochin has outgrown its original bounds and is now the general name given to much of the region adjoining the original town, which now includes Cochin, Fort Kochi, Mattanchery, Ernakulam and many other nearby towns and villages. Cochin is situated in Ernakulam district in the state of Kerala. Ernakulam is also the name of a town – the administrative capital of Ernakulam district – but, for all practical purposes Ernakulam and Cochin, generally, refer to the same place. Kochi is the arguably the ideal starting point for exploring the unfathomable diversity and beauty of Kerala, rated in the top three tourist destinations by the World Travel & Tourism Council and featured in National Geographic Traveler’s ’50 greatest places of a lifetime’.

HistoryEdit

Kochi has a very long and illustrious history. But, the origin of the name is still shrouded in mystery. Many theories exist, but none are strong enough to be conclusive. Some historians believe that Kochi is a modified form of the word ‘Cochazhi’ which in Malayalam means ‘small sea’. Others are of the opinion that ‘Kochi’ was named so by the Chinese. According to them, traders from the court of the Chinese ruler Kublai Khan, gave Kochi the name of their homeland. The peculiar Chinese fishing nets found here, the only place outside China where it has been spotted, can possibly be attributed to the heavy Chinese influence the city has had in the past. Still another theory is that Kochi is derived from the word ‘Kaci’ meaning ‘harbour’.

Ooty

India / Tamil Nadu /Nilgiris /Ooty

Ooty also known as Udhagamandalam is the “Queen of hill stations” and the capital of Nilgiris district. It is one of the most popular tourist resorts in India. Nilgiris means “Blue Mountains”. It is a land of picturesque picnic spots. Used to be popular summer and weekend getaway for the Britishers during the colonial days. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level. An added attraction for the tourists to Udagamandalam is the mountain train journey on a ratchet and pinion track which commences from Kallar, near Mettupalayam and wends its way through many hair-raising curves and fearful tunnels and chugs along beside deep ravines full of verdant vegetation, gurgling streams and tea gardens. One can notice a marvellous change in vegetation, as one goes from Kallar to Coonoor. The establishment of numerous tea estates made Ooty famous. Lofty mountains, dense forest, sprawling grasslands and miles and miles of tea gardens greet the passengers on most routes. The annual Tea and Tourism Festival attracts crowds in huge numbers.

If Day 1 was the day of the big-name acts (Indian Ocean, Raghu Dixit, Swarathma to name a few) and Day 2 the day of alternative, left-of-centre acts (Sulk Station, Bicycle Days, Schizophonic etc.), Day 3 was easily the most versatile in the sheer range of acts lined up. We at WTS look back fondly on the closing day of the first edition of The Mad Festival.

Pondicherry

India /Pondicherry /Pondicherry /Pondicherry

Pondicherry has been derived from the Tamil word Puducheri signifying ‘the new settlement’. It was a French settlement that comprised Pondy, Yanam, Karaikal, and Mahe. Amazing is the fact that different districts of Pondicherry fall under different states. The capital Pondicherry (Puducherry) is situated at a distance of around 200 km from Chennai. While Karaikal is also a part of Tamil Nadu, Mahe is located in Kerala, and Yanam is in Andhra Pradesh. There is a strong influence of French culture on Pondicherry town, especially on it’s architecture, a result of the centuries-old relations this place maintained with France. Today, Pondicherry is more famous because of its relation with Sri Aurobindo. Sri Aurobindo selected this peaceful and harmonious place to make his abode in the second decade of 20th century and remained there until his death. Though very small, Pondicherry was the largest French colony in India. The city has a long and interesting history of trade and war. All four districts of Puducherry are located in the coastal region. So some rivers drain into sea in Puducherry and none of them originates within the territory. Five rivers in Pondicherry district, seven in Karaikal, two in Mahé and one in Yanam drain into the sea.

HistoryEdit

Puducherry is a city, an urban agglomeration and a municipality in Pondicherry district in the Indian union territory of Puducherry. Located on the east coast of tamil nadu, 160km south of Chennai, pondicherry is the administrative headquarters of a Union Territory that includes three other small formerly French colonies, Mahe (in Kerala), Karaikal (in Tamil Nadu) and Yanam (in Andhra Pradesh). Pondicherry retains a distinct Gallic Flavour ans is often refered to as a window to French culture in India. The strictly geometrical pattern of the streets, the use of French by many of its citizens, the presence of the French Institute, all contribute to the charming French-Mediterranean character of the town. The Beach Road, a long strech of road with the Bay of Bengal on one side and restaurants, hotels, and the Aurbindo ashram to the other, is the best part of the city. The city has a laid-back attitude, and nobody seems to be in a hurry – a welcome break for the fast life of big cities. Pristine beaches, reminiscent of French colonial rule and the culture, Pondicherry owes the legacy of a prime tourist spot in Indian Union.

HistoryEdit

Mumbai dates back to the Stone Age, around 250 BC, according to the archaeological findings found in northern Mumbai. The renowned Maurya Dynasty ruled Mumbai beginning from 3rd century with Emperor Ashoka ruling the kingdom during the fag end of the dynasty. Later it was ruled by Hindu kings of the Silhara Empire up to 13th century. 1534 AD is a milestone in the history of Mumbai, when the Portuguese invaded the land and ruled for many years. Mumbai had been given as the dowry for marrying Catherine de Braganz to Charles II of England. The British rule of the Mumbai starts at that point of time in history. It is leased to Great English East India Company in 1668. Most of the city developments and industrial developments had taken place during the period of British rule, famed as Bombay Presidency. India’s first passenger railway line and the first sea port in India are some of the most valuable contributions of British in Mumbai.
