Ujjain

India /Madhya Pradesh /Ujjain /Ujjain

Ujjain, one of the best-known cities of ancient India and one of Hinduism’s seven sacred cities, is one of the four centers of the Kumbh Mela, attracting about three million pilgrims every 12 years. At other times, a constant stream come to bath in the River Shipra and worship at the temples. Despite its sanctity and its age, it has few remarkable buildings. in its heyday, Ujjain was on a flourishing trade route to Mesopotamia and Egypt. Now a days, it is little more than a provincial town. Its origin is ascribed to the myth of Sagar Manthan (churning of the primordial ocean to discover the pot of nectar). The story goes that after the nectar was discovered, there was competition between the Gods and the demons to have the nectar first so as to attain immortality. During this chase a drop of nectar spilled and fell on Ujjain, thus making the city sacred. According to legend, the river Kshipra that flows across Ujjain is regarded to have originated due to the churning of the Gods and Goddesses.

Thrissur Pooram ; Venue:  Vadakkumnathan temple ; Period :  April ; Details:  Thrissur Pooram is the most spectacular and colourful festival of Kerala. The venue is Vadakkumnathan temple. It is celebrated in the month of April (Medam). Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of the erstwhile Cochin State in the late 18th century introduced this festival. Kerala’s popular temple festival Thrissur Pooram was held in Thrissur on Sunday. Thousands of people, including foreign tourists, participated in the ceremony which included a parade of 30 richly caparisoned pachyderms and also a performance by over 500 top-ranked percussionists.

Onam Festival ; Venue:  N.A. ; Period :  August or September ; Details:  Onam Festival in August or September, a curious activity takes place at Swaraj Round in Thrissur. The tigers come to town! Pulikkali, a traditional Kerala art form said to have originated in the late 18th century, sees people dress up as tigers. The name Pulikkali means “tiger play” or “tiger dance”, and that’s exactly what these man-tigers do. The best performer is selected out of the hundreds of participants. The dressing up process is long and tiring, and requires a great deal of patience. Bodies must be shaved before the first coat of paint is applied. It’s left to dry for a couple of hours, and then the second coat of paint is put on. Dancing like a tiger while dressed up in such a manner is no easy feat either!

HistoryEdit

Srinagar dates back to the 3rd century B.C, when it was part of the Mauryan Empire. King Ashoka is known to have introduced Buddhism to this part of the country and thus, Srinagar became an important seat in Buddhism. The city came under the ruling of the Kushans in the 1st century and further fell into the hands of the Huns in the 6th century. Before the city came under the rule of the Mughals in the 14th century, Buddhists and Hindu kings ruled there. Akbar tried to gain control of the city after tricking the then ruler King Yusuf Shah Chuk and was successful in establishing the Mughal Empire in Srinagar along with various parts of the Kashmir valley. After the downfall of Aurangzeb in 1707, the city went under the control of the Pashtun tribes and the Durrani Empire, who ruled here for many decades. In the year 1814 Raja Ranjit Singh conquered the city marking the onset of the Sikh rule in Kashmir. In 1846, the British signed a peace treaty with the Sikhs and established Gulab Singh as the independent ruler of Srinagar. It remained so till independence after which the government of India took Srinagar under its administration. However, Kashmir valley has remained a subject of conflict between India and Pakistan. Various tribes like Pashtun, gained power and tried to capture the city. However, Indian Army was able to restore the city to its ground. A covenant was signed between Hari Singh (then ruler of Srinagar) and Government of India declaring Srinagar to be a part of Indian Republic.
