Vaishali

India /Bihar /Patna /Vaishali

Vaishali was one of the first Republican states of India, having an elected body of representatives. Vaishali is situated about 55 kms. to the north of Patna. Vaishali derived its name from King Vaishala, a famous ruler mentioned in the Ramayana. Vaishali was a famous city in the days of the Buddha. The Lord Buddha precahed his last sermons here, before attaining Nirvana or enlightenment. Vaishali is also famous for Amrapali, the beautiful dancer and courtesan of Vaishali, who offered Buddha a mango orchard and impressed by his teachings became a nun. The ruins of the old city have been discovered near the village Besarh on the north banks of the river Ganga. Vaishali today is a small village surrounded by banana and mango groves as well as rice fields. But excavations in the area have brought to light an impressive historical past. The epic Ramayana tells the story of the heroic King Vishal who ruled here. Historians maintain that one of the world’s first democratic republics with an elected assembly of representatives flourished here in the 6th century B.C. in the time of the Vajjis and the Lichchavis. Two stupas were erected to commemorate this event. Jainism, too, has its origins in Vaishali, for in 527 B.C., Lord Mahavir was born on the outskirts of the city, and lived in Vaishali till he was 22. Vaishali is then twice blessed and remains an important pilgrim center for both Buddhists and Jains, attracting also historians foraging for the past.

HistoryEdit

Vaishali history dates back to the 6th century BC when it was a flourishing city. The city of Vaishali belonged to the Lichchavis, a clan of Kshatriyas who ruled the territory as a republic. Vaishali was one of the first cities in the world to adopt a republican form of government. This place was visited by the great Chinese travelers Fa-hien and Hiuen-Tsang who took back a piece of sculpture from one of the stupas. It is also said that once the city experienced a terrible plague. The citizens requested the Buddha to visit the city. With his arrival, the plague ended. The Buddha took a liking for the place and visited Vaishali several times to preach his gospel. Here, in the garden of the courtesan Amrapali, he delivered his last sermons and announced his nirvana from the world. Later, Emperor Ashoka built a huge lion pillor here in memory of the Buddha, to commemorate the spot of the last sermon. In 383 AD, the second Buddhist council was also held here to discuss the ten points of Vinaya, the rule of conduct under dispute and two stupas were erected to commemorate the event. The Ashoka Pillar, Ramkund, Buddhist stupas and Raja Vishal Ka Ghar are worth visiting places in Vaishali. The history of Vaishali district is thus very ancient, and finds mention in the Indian classic Mahabharata, as well as in Buddhist and Jain tradition.

HistoryEdit

Coimbatore history highlights the city, to have been formed part of the Kongu country and was initially inhibited by the tribes, dating back to the Sangam age (3rd century B.C. to 3rd Century A.D.). The city was then annexed by the Rashtra Kutas and later by the Chola kings. The Chola rule was followed by the Chalukyas, pandayas and the Cysalas before falling under the hands of the Madurai Sultanets. However, during the wars fought between the years 1377-78, the kingdom was ruined due to the conflict between the of Muthu Veerappa Nayak and Tirumal nayak. Hyder Ali of Mysore took over the reigns of Coimbatore in the year 1799. Earlier known as Kongunad, the name Coimbatore was rechristened by the British. In many parts of the Coimbatore, it is still referred through its native name – Kovai. In the later part of the 18th century, due to the fall of Tipu Sultan, the city came under the territory of the East India Company and remained under the British governance till India’s independence in 1947. Coimbatore is popular for playing a significant role in the movement of independence. This small hamlet of Tamil Nadu today is an important hub for textile and engineering.

Kodaikanal’s history goes back to the pre historic times. The Dolems home, from the Chera Dynasty, made of great stome slabs found in the city, speaks of the city’s pre historic connection. The first inhabitants of Kodaikanal were Palaiyar, who were tribal and flourished before the current era i.e. BCE.Sangam Literature, belonging to the early Christian era also includes some details about the city. The fear of invasion of Tipu Sultan forced the people of Palani Foot hills to leave the village and settle in the Kodi hills. For them, Kodaikanal became the safe haven for the scorching summers of other parts of Tamil Nadu. Some of the renowned British personalities to have visited this scenic town were – C R Cotton Judge who was a sub collector and Dr. Weight. Dr.Fane, who got two houses constructed here. Koidakanal got its first church in 1860 and further a lot many developments were taken place in event of the visits of the prominent leaders like Governors of Madras Sir Charles Travelyon and Lord Napier during 1860 and 1871. The first train service was started in 1875 when the route from Chennai to Madurai and Tuticorin was extended.

HistoryEdit

Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta in English, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal and is located in eastern India on the east bank of the River Hooghly. In the Hindu epics, the God Shiva was understandably dismayed to happen upon the charred corpse of Sati, his newly wed wife (an incarnation of Kali). However, his decision to destroy the world in retribution was considered somewhat of an over-reaction by fellow deities. Vishnu interceded to stop Shiva’s ‘dance of destruction’, but in so doing dismembered Sati’s cadaver into 51 pieces. These gory chunks landed at widely disbursed points across India. One of her toes fell at Kalikata (now Kalighat), where the site became honoured by a much revered temple. Once the main channel of the Ganges (Ganga) River, about 96 miles (154 km) upstream from the head of the Bay of Bengal; there the port city developed as a point of transshipment from water to land and from river to sea. The city’s former name, Calcutta, is an Anglicized version of the Bengali name Kalikata. According to some, Kalikata is derived from the Bengali word Kalikshetra, meaning “Ground of (the Goddess) Kali.” Some say the city’s name derives from the location of its original settlement on the bank of a canal (khal).

Sravasti

India /Uttar Pradesh /Gonda /Sravasti

Savatthi (Sravasti) was located on the banks of the river Aciravati (now called the Rapti river). It was the capital city of the kingdom of Kosala, and its king was called Pasenadi, who was a disciple of Buddha. It is a beautiful city with vast amounts of agriculture and diversity. Buddhaghosa says that, in the Buddha’s day, there were fifty-seven thousand families in Savatthi, and that it was the chief city in the country of Kasi Kosala, which was three hundred leagues in extent and had eighty thousand villages. He stated the population of Sávatthi to have been 180 million(?). The road from Rajagaha to Savatthi passed through Vesali, and the Parayanavagga gives as the resting places between the two cities: Setavya, Kapilavatthu, Kusinara, Pava and Bhoganagara. Further on, there was a road running southwards from Savatthi through Saketa to Kosambi. Between Saketa and Savatthi was located Toranavatthu. The Buddha passed the greater part of his monastic life in Savatthi. His first visit to Savatthi was at the invitation of Anathapindika, whom he met in Rajagaha. The main monasteries in Savatthi were the Jetavana and the Pubbarama. Savatthi also contained the monastery of Rajakarama, built by Pasenadi, opposite Jetavana. Not far from the city was a dark forest called the Andhavana, where some monks and nuns went to live. Outside the city gate of Savatthi was a fisherman’s village of five hundred families.

Thiruvananthapuram

India /Kerala /Thiruvananthapuram /Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruananthapuram, the jewel in the emerald necklace that Kerala is for the Indian sub-continent, must surely have Parasuramanbeen a “must see” destination for ages, long before National Geographic Traveller classified it as one. Surely long before Sage Parasurama , according to local legend, threw his divine battle axe from Kanyakumari to Gokarnam to wrest Kerala, God’s own land, from the Varuna the sea god; before the times of Mahabali the democratic and just ruler of this wonderful land who was sent down to the netherworld through deceit. It doesnt take any flights of fancy to imagine that this land fired the imaginations of intrepid travellers and explorers like Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Marco Polo, Fa Hien, and quite possibly, countless others from the pages of history, recorded or not.

HistoryEdit

Tiruchirappalli or Trichy as it is commonly referred to, is known for it’s temple architecture. The oldest structure in the fort is a cave temple built by Pallavas in 580 AD. During the Cholas period, the nearby town of Woraiyur was their capital, but the Pallavas did not keep control of this strategic city and lost it to the Pandyas. The Cholas reasserted themselves in the 10th century. Trichy continued to be in their possession until the decline of the empire, after which it became a Vijayanagara stronghold. In mid 14th century, the region was under the Delhi Sultanate, after Malik Kafur’s raid on South India. They were ousted and the region came under the control of Vijayanagara Empire. During the early part of 16th century, the region came under the control of Madurai Nayaks, who were the earlier governors of Vijayanagara Empire. However, it was under the Nayaks of Madurai that Trichy prospered in its own right and grew to be the city that it is today. The Nayaks of Madurai constructed the Rock Fort Temple Lake along with major walls as foundations, establishing the town as a trading city and later, their capital. The fort palace also witnessed the transfer of power from Queen Meenakshi to Chanda Sahib, as he ruled in conjunction with the French alliance. He lost this command when his uncle, the Nawab of Arcot along with the British, seized the fort after the Carnatic wars. This enabled the British to gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu and later South India.
