The city got the name as “Anantapur” from “Anantasaagaram” (that means ‘Endless Ocean’). Anantasaagaram is a big tank, which was built by Sri Chikka Vodaya, a minister Bukka Rayalu, a Vijayanagaran king. The town was popularly known as “Hande Anantapuram”, ‘Hande’, which means Chief. Another Vijayanagaran ruler, Hanumappa Naidu gifted Anantapur to Hande family. Over a period of time, the town was ruled by Qutub Shahis, Mughals and then by the Nawabs of Kadapa. The Hande chiefs continued to rule as subordinates under the subsequent rulers. Anantapur was then occupied by the Palegar (the Reddy community) of Bellary during the time of Ramappa. Later, it was seized by Ramappa’s son Siddappa, who bought the place for Rs. 50, 000 from Morari Rao Ghorpade in 1757.

Anaimalai

India /Tamil Nadu /Coimbatore Hills /Anaimalai

Anaimalai exists near an abundant supply of wildlife, animals like panthers, crocodiles, tigers, elephants, spotted deer, civet cats, and wild boars are found in the region. Numerous birds can also be sighted in the area. It is possible to spot such birds as the Malabar pied hornbill, black headed oriole, rocket-tailed drongo, tree pie, spotted dove, and red whiskered bulbul. In fact, the vary name of this village invokes thoughts of wildlife, since the name’s translation means elephant hill. Located in the Coimbatore Hills district in the state of Tamil Nadu, the biggest draw for tourists in this area is the remarkable beauty of the natural landscape that is there. Many different shades of green make up the dense forest of this area. The village itself also has some incredibly interesting history. Anaimalai is one of the eight sacred Jaina hills. Right by the village there is a natural cavern that contains numerous berths that are located both inside and outside of it. There is a Brahmi inscription on the outside wall that is dated back to the 1st or 2nd century. This inscription states that the berths were gifts from Nathan of Kunrattur made in honor of three monks named Eri Aritan, Attuvay, and Arrattakayipan. This is a rather unusual find since this village was not known for being a lama center until the 9th century. It was around that time that several stone sculptures started to be carved into the rocks by devout local people. Best season to visit Anaimalai is June to March, tourists may avoid heavy rainy days. March to May Sanctuary may be closed and the season is good for other sight seeing. June to September is good for nature viewing and also to spot wild animals.

HistoryEdit

Anaimalai was known as Nannanur and ruled by a chieftain called Nannan. There was a dense grove of mango trees belonging to him. Appointing checkpost officials, he had proclaimed punitive measures against trespassers. An unfortunate young woman who was bathing in the river Aliyar stumbles upon a mango fruit coming to her, floating on the water. Unable to resist temptation, she at once picked it up and bit it. The prying officials reported the news to the ruler. The innocent woman was produced before the chieftain with her clothes dripping water. She pleaded not guilty and prayed to the lord to be sat free. She explained that she never committed any offence; if at all it was considered an act of stealth, it was more by chance than by choice. Although the father of the woman offered to give an image made of gold equal to her weight by way of compensation together with 81 elephants, the ruler did not relent and ordered her execution.

HistoryEdit

Badoda city is also known to have had the name Chandanavati named after its ruler, A Rajput king Raja Chandan. Two other intriguing names that Baroda is believed to have possessed at different points in time are Virakshetra (A Land of warriors) and Vatodar (in the heart of the Banyan tree). Legend says that the region in and around Baroda (Vat meaning Banyan tree and Aodh meaning tent/canopy) was home to large groves of Banyan tress that formed a canopy kind of layer. The Name Baroda was changed to Vadodara in 1974 but early historical literature suggest that the English travelers and merchants referred to this town as Brodera! The early trade settlers made an entry into the land in 812 AD. The imperial Baroda province was mainly ruled by Hindu kings till the year 1297. The Gupta Empire was taken over by the Chalukya Dynasty after intense rivalry culminated in a series of fierce battles. When this resplendent region was taken over by the Solanki Rajputs, the Muslim rule had spread across India, and the reins of power were then snatched by the Delhi Sultans. The city was ruled for a long time by these Sultans, until they were easily overthrown by the Mughal emperors.

HistoryEdit

Bardhaman became a district headquarters of British India. Burdwan is an alternative name for the city, which remains in use since the British period. The origin of this name dates back to the 6th century BCE and is ascribed to Vardhaman Swami or Mahavira (599-527 BCE), the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, who spent some time in Astikagrama, according to the Jain scripture of Kalpasutra. This place was renamed as Vardhamana in his honour. The erstwhile Maharajas of Burdwan in Bengal belong to the Kapoor clan of the Khatri community, and hailed originally from the Punjab. Maharaja Bhadur Tedj Chand Ray adopted Chunilal Kapur who later assumed the Zamindari of Burdwan. Sangram Ray is said to have travelled eastwards on pilgrimage to the temple-town of Puri in Orissa. Thereafter, he travelled further northeast and settled permanently at Baikunthpur near the town of Burdwan, where he and his son, Banku Bihari, prospered vastly as tradesmen and bankers.
