HistoryEdit

Puri has a fascinating history that involves mythology and facts in perfect harmony. In the pre historic times, Puri was colonized by the Sabaras, a tribe belonging to the Pre Aryans. Puri has been an important link between the Eastern and Southern India in ancient times.According to the works of Huien Tsang Puri was earlier known as Charitra. However, nothing concrete can be said about the fact. Historians are also of the opinion that the name of the city to be Purusottam Kshetra after the famous Purusottum temple, today known as Jagannath Temple, that was built here during the reigns of Choganga Deva. Mughals too declared their rule on the city during the 15th century. During their reign the state of Orissa was divided into three revenue collecting circar, wherein Puri was part of the Kataka Circar. The history of Puri also suggest invasion by the Afghans who destroyed and reduced the temple to the ruins. The temple was thus restored by the Marathas who ruled here before the city went to the controls of British. During the British rule, the temple was managed by the King of Orissa.Puri was incorporated as a part of Orissa in 1948.

Bishnupur is a town in the Bankura District of West Bengal about 132Km from Kolkata. It is famous for its terracotta temples and Baluchari sarees. The town has a glorious past that is reflected in its rich architecture, music and handicrafts such as pottery and weaving. It prospered in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Ruled by a line of Hindu Rajas of the Malla dynasty, Bishnupur developed a unique form of architecture and has perhaps the most brilliant and detailed terracotta work in Eastern India that has withstood the ravages of time. The history of Bishnupur can be traced back to 694 AD, when King Raghunath I founded the Malla dynasty. However it was much later in 994 AD that the place was named Bishnupur. The name is derived from the name of the Hindu God ‘Vishnu’. The majority of the people belong to the ‘Vaishnava’ sect.

The history of the ‘city of Joy’ dated back to 10th century, when it was founded by Raja Bhoj. Though the city finds its mention in the Sanskrit inscription of 555 A.D., not much of it has been retained. The city was referred as Mandavgarh under the rule of Parmara rulers in the 11th and 12th century. However, the name was changed to ‘Shadiabad’ (meaning happiness) by Alauddin Khilji, who gained control over the city in the 13th century.

Aritar will not be out of context here. The British wanted to establish trade relation with Tibet and signed the Indo-Tibet trade convention in 1904. The treaty dictated by Lord Younghusband secured monopoly trading privileges in Tibet for the British. The route chalked out started from Kalimpong, Pedong to Jelepla via Rhenock, Aritar, Zuluk and headed towards Chumbi valley in Tibet. Sir James Cloud White, the British political officer of Sikkim, took the hazardous trip to Tibet and established the first police outpost in Sikkim at Aritar. Therefore it can safely be concluded that Aritar has a chequered history. It had commercial importance more than Gangtok in the past.
