HistoryEdit

Ellora caves were carved out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills between the 6th and 10th centuries. The carving work began around 550 AD, about the same time the Ajanta Caves (100km northeast) were abandoned. The Ellora Caves were built at time when Buddhism was declining in India and Hinduism was beginning to reassert itself. The Brahmanical movement was especially powerful under the patronage of the Chalukya and Rashtrakuta kings, who oversaw most of the work at Ellora – including the magnificent Kailasa Temple built in the 700s.The last period of building activity took place in the 10th century, when the local rulers switched allegiance from Shaivism (Hinduism devoted to Shiva) to the Digambara sect of Jainism. The coexistence of structures from three different religions serve as a splendid visual representation of the prevalent religious tolerance of India. For this reason and others, the Ellora Caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

HistoryEdit

Ajanta, the Buddhist Caves, are located in Maharashtra, were built from 200BC to 600AD almost 300 years after the death of The Buddha, when the reverence of its followers had reached its peak. These caves and their sculptures were developed over 800 years. For almost 1200 years then, they were abandoned and forgotten. Interestingly, its isolation contributed to its excellent preservation in which some of the remarkable paintings remain to this day. Though initially conceptualized to house the monks, these caves eventually developed as a part of a highly sophisticated, graphically rich culture that evolved for over a thousand years. Moving through the caves, one can actually experience the time warp and the evolution of story telling through the visual medium. Ajanta is a three-dimensional canvas, capturing the changing forms of art, culture, architecture, attires, jewelry, fashion, culinary rituals painted in the most earthen Indian colours.

Ayodhya

India /Uttar Pradesh /Faizabad /Ayodhya

Ayodhya on the banks of the holy river Sarayu resounds with the memories of a legendary hero. A city that has been benevolently blessed with so many saintly personalities Ayodhya reverberates a historic past with a religious fervor. A city that owns a rich history of centuries is mostly famed as the birthplace of Rama, the symbol of Indian man hood and even today it continues to hog the limelight for the same reason. History of this temple city is the story of the illustrious rulers of Suryavamshis whose victorious and legendary tales gave birth to the great epic, Ramayana. Saketa as Ayodhya known in the ancient times unfurls the spectacular moments in the great epic Ramayana. One among the 16 Janapadas of the 6th century, Ayodhya was the capital of a vast stretch of Land, which spread over from the Kabul Valley to the banks of Godavari. During those days it was the final word in the kingly affairs and later this land of the Kosala Kings was devastated by the mighty Magadhans. The city has gained reputation as a great centre of learning and enlightenment under the glorious rule of the Mauryans and Guptas. As the cradle of different religions, Ayodhya found its mention in the various religious texts. A miscellany of ancient structures that reveals the legendary tales of Hinduism, Budhism, Jainism and Sikhism can still be seen in Ayodhya. From Vedas to the holy scriptures of the Jains this land has been described as “a city built by Gods and being as prosperous as paradise itself”. Shopping in this legendary place would be a different experience. Obviously one could not expect malls and complexes in such a religious destination, but the small gallies and bazaars in this are swarming with public at all probable times. With its typical artifacts and souvenirs these markets have their own characteristics, which makes your shopping a delightful experience. Though today’s Ayodhya presents a tiny, bucolic city with ancient ramifications it carries a versatile history and tradition that hold an undeniable influence on the teeming millions of India. Best Season to visit Ayodhya is from October to March. October to March are ideal for pilgrimage and other tourist activities. July to September is good for short trips in and around the city.

HistoryEdit

The history of the ancient city of Ayodhya goes back to the time of the Suryavanshi kings ‘Dashratha’ who was the 63rd monarch in the solar line. The history of Ayodhya talks about the mythological tales of the ‘Ramayana’ wherein Lord Rama was sent on a 14 year exile by his step mother, Kaikayi. According to the documentations of saint Valmiki, Lord Rama was born here and various other saints like Tulsidas and Kamban also have praised the Lord as well as the city in their memoirs. The city also finds its mention in the ‘Atharvaveda’ where Vrindavan has been described as a prosperous heaven built by the Gods themselves. The city is also an important center for Buddhist pilgrimage during the 5th century BCE. Many centers of learning and monument were built by the king Asoka of the Mauryan dynasty. The Guptas are also known to have ruled here. The city emerged as important trade hub in 600 BCE. Various documents also suggest the city to have been an important pilgrimage place for Jains as well.

Avantiswami temple, was built during the time period of 855 to 883 AD. This temple is dedicated to the main deity Lord Vishnu, and is an enormous structure with a central shrine. Avantishwara (Shiva) temple is the smaller temple at Avantipur and built a little before the larger Avantiswami temple. It is also the most ruined, with just the main entrance gateway still standing erect. The rest of the temple remains just up to base level. The entrance gateway leads into a court with the main shrine at the center, and four subsidiary platforms at each corner of the court. The base of the central shrine structure of this particular temple – with stairs projecting out from all four sides – could be similar to the base of the main tomb at the Zain-ul-Abidin tomb complex in Srinagar, and could suggest a reason behind the unusual shape of that structure.

HistoryEdit

Nagpur’s first reference dates back to the 10th century, when an inscription on a copper-plate was discovered at Devali in the neighboring Wardha District. Many illustrious dynasties like the Vakataka Dynasty during the 4th century, Badami Chalukya’s, the Rashtrakuta’s and finally the Yadava’s – all left their mark on this city. The city was later captured by the Mughal Empire & the present day city of Nagpur is credited to have been founded by the Bakut Buland – who was the last prince of the Deogarh-Nagpur Kingdom. Nagpur also played part in the Non-Cooperation Movement which was launched in the 1920 political session in the city. It was only after 1950 that the Central Provinces & Berar became the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh & Nagpur was made its capital. Linguistic reorganizations in the state brought about the further divide into Gujarat & Madhya Pradesh & Maharashtra. And present day Nagpur lies in the state of Maharashtra – which geographically lies at the center of the countries map & the same can be seen at the “Zero Mile” marker in the city

By Other : The best way to get around are the yellow and black 3 wheeled taxicabs known as the Autorickshaws or simply Rickshaws. Hollering ‘Auto’ or ‘Rickshaw’ at a passing Rickshaw should be enough to catch the drivers attention. In most cases the drivers would be able to understand Hindi and maybe even a few words of English. They are normally quite helpful but are known to cheat tourists so bargain hard and it might be a good idea to ask a pedestrian to get an idea about how much it costs normally to reach your destination by auto. In Nagpur, auto rickshaws don’t follow the meter system. They all have them, they are supposed to follow them, but, it will be hard to find an auto with a working meter.

Auli in the 8th century AD, the great Guru Adi Shankaracharya is said to have walked on these fields. The temple built by him at Joshimath still exists. For hundreds of years, the colorful semi-nomadic tribes of the Bhotiyas, of the Mongolian stock, traveled on the trails at Auli, locally called Thatauli. Their longhaired yaks, laden with an assortment of goods, assisted them in conducting a flourishing trade with the nearby situated Tibet. Before Auli was developed as a ski resort, its slopes were the training ground for men of valor and courage-the ski-equipped men of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force. Among the awesome, legendary peaks ranged round Auli the 23,490-feet-high Trishul (literally meaning, the strident of Lord Shiva) was the sight of a unique expedition in 1958. The mountaineers took four days to climb the peak and only 90 minutes to ski down to the base camp.
