Kurukshetra

India /Haryana /Kurukshetra /Kurukshetra

Kurukshetra means the field of righteousness, a name well suited to its legendary past and religious predominance. A holy town in the state of, Kurukshethra had acquired many ramifications and to the teeming millions of India, this place reminds them of the sacred association it has with lord Krishna, the benevolent god in the entire Hindu Pantheon. The legendary tales of Kurushethra starts with Kuru, who laid the foundation of a domain that has its roots on uprightness and benevolence. Ironically this land has to witness a great battle between the successors of Kuru, in which the lord himself had played a key role. Thus, Kurukshetra encompasses a rich and a colourful history of centuries, where one can experience the theological and rational gibbets of Hinduism. As the time goes on the sacredness of the city began to grow with the visit of saintly avatars like Lord Buddha’ and numerous Sikh gurus. Kurukshetra stands as an unparallel pilgrimage site, which includes a large number of devout centers, holy shrines, kunds and Gurudwaras linked with the epic ages and the earliest Indian civilization.Though Kurukshethra holds versatile facets in the religious arena, its holiness and sanctity lies in the single fact that this was the place where lord Krishna preached the theory of Karma to his favorite friend Arjun. This gave birth to the holiest of all Hindu textures, Bhagawat Gita or the Song Celestial, which symbolizes the paramount principles of the Hindu religion. As the cradle of Indian civilization, this place found its rendering in many of the ancient texts and most of the books of that time contain either a description of Kurukshetra or names of personalities from there. A good number of Vedic transcripts were composed from here and Kurukshetra was the seat of all the social, spiritual and political traditions of the old era.Apart from the devout sites, a bevy of other fascinating and alluring attractions that houses historical interest are in store in Kurukshethra. Archaeological expeditions have proved that this city was in existence during the pre-Harrapan times. Kurukshethra with its religious colours and historical succinctness would definitely a treasure hunt for all those who want to get a deep in sight in the cultural ethnicity of ancient India.

HistoryEdit

Kurukshetra is as old as the Aryans made their entry into this subcontinent (between 2000 and 1500 BC). It is believed that the Rig Veda was composed between 1500 and 1000 BC in this place. The theological and philosophical framework of Hinduism was believed to be shaped in Kurukshetra between the 5th century BC and the 5th century AD. The land of Kurukshetra was situated between two rivers — the Sarasvati and the Drishadvati. This land has been known as Uttravedi, Brahmavedi, Dharamkshetra and Kurukshetra at different periods. When King Kuru came on this land it was called Uttarvedi. It is written in Puranas that Kurukshetra is named after King Kuru of the Bharata Dynasty, ancestor of Pandavas and Kauravas. The Bharata Dynasty came and settled on this land. Later the 18 days Battle of Mahabharata was fought on this land between the Pandavas and Kauravas, during which Lord Krishna preached Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna at Jyotisar.

HistoryEdit

Kedarnath is all about the legends that also form the reason behind the holiness of the city. Named after Lord Shiva, Kedarnath is believed to have come into existence after the Pandava brothers were asked to seek Lord Shiva’s blessing in order to do penance for the killing of their cousins.Shiva was not willing to meet the Pandavas and so he furled and disguised himself in Guptakashi. While fleeing from the Pandavas, he stopped at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. Inspite of all this, the Pandavas were able to find him and in retaliation he started to thrust inside the ground. He then dived into the ground leaving behind his hump. However, the willpower and determination of the Pandavas impressed him and he forgave their sins, gave them his blessing and allowed them to worship his hump. The stone like structure that is revered today is the very hump of the Lord.

During the early part of the 20th century the famous Central Asian explorer Sir Marc Aurel Stein (1862 – 1943), made his home here in a tent between his expeditions. It was a favourite summer holiday destination for the British stationed in India. The surrounding areas were politically restive during the 1990s uprising in Kashmir, but since a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in 2003, the town has enjoyed a period of relative peace and quiet. The town is nestled within the imposing Himalayan peaks, and lies within miles of the Line of Control. It receives heavy snowfall during the winter season and is a popular ski resort.
