HistoryEdit

Dadra and Nagar Haveli comprises of 72 villages which has a reputed history with the Portuguese dominating the area for more than a century and half. In July 1954 the Indian nationalist volunteers liberated Dadra and Nagar Haveli resulting in a pro-India administration. It was from August 11th, 1961 and under the 10th Amendment to the Constitution, the territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli became a centrally administered union territory. The profound history of Dadra and Nagar Haveli begins with the defeat of the Kohli chieftains of the region by the invading Rajput kings. It was the Marathas that retrieved the region from the rule of the Rajputs in the mid 18th century. In 1779, the Maratha Peshwa formed an alliance with the Portuguese allowing them to collect revenue from the 79 villages of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The rule of the Portuguese in the region continued till the region gained independence on 2 August 1954. The region was merged with the Union of India in the year 1961

HistoryEdit

The Bhongir fort stands on a single hill more than 500 feet above the ground and spreads over an area of 40 acres. The architecture of the fort is one of its kinds with oval-shaped construction and two entry points. The fort is well fortified with moat surrounding it. There are underground chambers, trap doors, some secret places for weapon storage and stables, which you can find in and around the fort premises. There are one or two ponds with lotuses still growing in it and pretty deep wells on the hill. It really amazes you to see these water bodies on a solid rock, which was the source of water, used for drinking and other domestic purposes during those days. The architecture of the fort was very well designed and fortified. You can observe that the old turrets were built for spears, arrows and the later ones for silent guns.  There are some small dwellings that came up at the bottom of this hill fort.Once you climb up the hill, you ll get a panoramic view of Bhongir and the surroundings lush green fields. To reach the fort, you can either climb the stairway or trek the steep rocks. If you are looking for an adventure, then trekking on the steep rocks is real fun. Trekking way to the fort takes about an hour and is real fun. The more you explore the more exciting things you can discover.
