Srirangapatnam

India /Karnataka /Mandya /Srirangapatnam

Srirangapatnam is an egg-shaped island formed by the two subdivisions of river Cauvery. It is located in the district of Mandya. The whole of the town is surrounded by the River Kaveri and gives a look of an island. The town has historic, cultural and religious importance. History says that Lord Buddha visited and remained on one of the islands near Srirangapatnam. The town got its name from the celebrated Ranganathaswamy temple. This temple dominates the town which is the reason that Srirangapattanam is one of the most important Vaishnava centers of South India. In the 9th century the temple was built by the rulers of the Ganga dynasty. The existence of the Kaveri river is regarded auspicious. The Paschima Vaahini division of the Kaveri at Srirangapattanam is considered to be sanctified. It is here that the pious come from far and wide to submerge the ashes of the dead soul and perform obeisance to their antecedents in these waters. Srirangapatna was the capital of Hyder Ali & his son Tipu Sultan. In the 18th century the Marathas assaulted Srirangapatnam. Hyder pulled back the Marathas and thus saved the Kingdom. But in the year 1799 Tipu triggered a furious combat against the British and he fell down courageously thus supporting his capital. A fort was built at Srirangapatna by a feudal lord in 1537 and it had four main entering. It had a dual wall defense arrangement. The architectural mold of the fort is Indo-Islamic with Persian inscription on the gateway which shows the date of construction.

HistoryEdit

Srirangapatnam is a historical town that was founded by the rulers of the Ganga dynasty way back in the 9th century. The city came to limelight during the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire where it enjoyed an erstwhile status. The downfall of the Vijayanagar Emprie marked the rise of the Woodeyar kings. Under the rule of Raja Woodeyar, the city was conquered from Rangaraya and to mark his victory, celebrated the ten day long festival, Navratra. The city remained under the banner of the Mysore dynasty from 1610. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan took over the reigns of Srirangapatna after defeating the Woodeyar king and made it its capital for a short while. Srirangapatna is famous for the battle of Seringapatnam, fought in 1799. It was this battle that marked the end of the Tipu sultan. Tipu Sultan fought against a joint troop of 50000 men from the Nizam of Hyderabad and British forces. Tipu sultan was betrayed by one of his own comrades in this battle and surrendered to death inside the fort of Srirangapatnam.

Kalady

India /Kerala /Ernakulam /Kalady

Kalady (literally means feet), situated majestically on the banks of the river Periyar, is a popular Hindu religious destination in Kerala. Famed as the birth place of Adi Sankara, the founder of the Advaita order, Kalady was his birth place. Born into a Brahmin family in the 8th century, Sringeri Mutt located located here is a must see place among Hindu pilgrims. The Kalady river (Periyar) flows through the town. The legend associated with this river is that, while going to River Poorna, young Sankara’s mother fainted. Knowing of this Sankara fervently prayed to Lord Krishna and Krishna blessed him by saying that the river will originate from the feet (Kalady) of Sankara. Proof to this is that, one can see that the river takes an unusual turn here towards the Mutt. Kalady houses a shrine built in the memory of Adi Sankara. The Sri Adi Sankara Keerthi Sthamba Mandapam established by Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt is the prime attraction here. The memorial shrine stands tall with a 9-storeyed octagonal tower showcasing the life of the saint and the six ways of worshiping.
