HistoryEdit

The name of this town was originally Chinna Balaporum. Originating from either Tamil or Telugu for Chinna meaning small while “balla” means the measure to quantify food grains, and “pura” means “town”. According to a popular legend, the Marigowda, the son of the chief Avathimalla Biregowda, was hunting one day in the Kodimanchanahalli forest. He found a rabbit standing fearlessly in front of hunting dogs. Excited by this, the chief told his son that it eas a sign of the boldness of the local people. So, he obtained permission from the king of Vijayanagara and built a fort and a town. This in course of time developed into the town of Chickballapur. During the rule of Baichegowda, the king of Mysore attacked the fort but had to withdraw due to the interference of Marathas. Dodda Byregowda, who came to power after Baichegowda, resumed control of the territories seized earlier by Mysore. In 1762, during the rule of Chikkappanayaka, Hyder Ali laid siege the town for a period of three months. Then Chikkappanayaka agreed to pay 5-lakhs pagodas, and the army was withdrawn. After this, Chikkappa Nayaka with the help of Murariraya of Gooty tried to get back his powers. He was hiding at Nandi hills along with Chikkappa Nayaka. Immediately Hyder Ali took Chickballapur and other places and arrested Chikkappa Nayaka. Then with interfere of Lord Cornwallis, Chickballapur was handed over to Narayanagowda.

Chidambaram

India / Tamil Nadu /Cuddalore / Chidambaram

Chidambaram is a small temple town in Tamil Nadu, India where the Indian culture, tradition and religious rituals are preserved with all its aesthetic values and beauty. Chidambaram, the word synonym to Lord Shiva, is a hot spot among Shivaites (devotees of Lord Shiva) with the renowned Chidambaram Natarajar temple. Chidambaram is famed as the land of one of the most ancient Shiva temples referred in Puranas and Mythologies. As per Hindu belief there are five natural elements forming the whole world and there are five Shiva temples representing each of these elements. Chidambaram is one among the five temples and represents the air (space), one of the five natural elements creating the body and world. The other Shiva temples coming in this category are Kanchi Ekambareswara (earth), Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeswara (water), Kalahasti Nathar (wind) and Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleswara (fire). Lord Shiva appears in the form of the cosmic dancer Nataraja in this temple. This temple has a Nataraja idol as the prime deity, a distinct feature from other temples where Shivalingam is worshiped as the prime deity. This ancient temple, visited by thousands and thousands from all over the world every year, was constructed by the Chola Kings. The temple has imposing architecturally built gopurams (towers) on each side and has five spacious courts. The temple also has a deity of Lord Govindaraja Perumal, a form of Lord Vishnu. This temple is one of the few temples in which both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are worshiped.

HistoryEdit

Chidambaram is also popularly known by the name Thillai for in olden days it was more of a forest with a variety known as thillai which is a species of mangrove trees. History dates back to a small shrine on the bank of a tank where the two renowned saints Vyagrapada and Patanjali were worshipped. This place is now referred by the name Thirumoolanathar. The act of self-mortification of these two saints was accomplished, where Lord Shiva was very pleased and it is believed that on the day of Thai Poosam Lord Nataraja revealed himself by his cosmic dance. Later in this place a golden hall of dance was built by Jatavarman Sundra Pandya (AD 1251-1272) and was covered with gold plates.

Buddhism rules Sarnath because this is where Buddha preached his first Sermon and which thus making it one of the four holiest places to the Buddhist world. Sarnath got its name from Saranganatha (God of Deer). The original sangha of Budhhism was born in deer park, a site in Sarnath and it is in this place Gautama Buddha first preached the Dharma. It is a major buddhist pilgimage destination. This is a pleasant place to meditate, take a retreat and move around the well-maintained gardens and Sarnath’s ruins. The main attractions are Asoka’s pillar, the ruins of the Mulagandhakuti and the huge second century old Dharma Stupa, also known as Dhamekha Stupa, built by the Emperor Ashoka. Buddhism flourished in Sarnath till the sixth century and then the Huns caused a trail of devastation and were followed by Mahmud of Ghazni and Qutub-ud-din Aibak who virtually razed Sarnath to the ground whatever was left by the Huns. The British archaeologists dug out the site, which heard the path to enlightenment from Buddha, stayed hidden amidst ruins, during 19th century. The place bears three fold values archeological, historical and religious. HistoryEdit

The Buddhist town of Sarnath boasts of a history that goes back to the ancient times. This is one of the most important pilgrim centers for Buddhists. Sarnath’s history began from the year 528 B.C., when Lord Buddha visited this city just 5 weeks after attaining salvation in.According to the memoirs of Huien Tsang, the famed Deer park at Sarnath was built by the Jataka king of. It was then that the name ‘Migadaya’ was given to the present day Sarnath. The present day name of the city appears to have been derived from Saranganath (the lord of deer). The invasion of Muhammad Ghazni in 1026 AD had a very bad impact on the archaeological monuments of the city. Various historical findings confirm Sarnath to be a major center of the Sammatiya school of Buddhism. The history of Sarnath from 13th century onwards remained into stupor till the year 1798, when the resident of Benaras, Mr. Duncan discovered a green marble casket that was recovered during the expedition conducted by the workmen of Jagat Singh.Since then, many archaeological excavation have been conducted at Sarnath, linking the history of the city to the Shunga Period (2nd to 1sy century BC), Kushans (1-2nd century AD), and the Gupta Period (from 4th- 6th century AD).

Sanchi

India /Madhya Pradesh /Raisen / Sanchi

A quaint little village at the footsteps of a hill Sanchi in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh carries the genesis of Buddhism in India. A tiny hamlet with a rich culture, Sanchi is embellished by a series of monasteries, stupas, holy shrines and pillars dating from 3rd century BC to 12th century AD. The glory of Sanchi, as a devout centre, can still be experienced in its composite formations where the rich carvings reflects various legendary beliefs and Buddhist myths. Sanchi also unfurls a true love story that is nothing short of a fairy tale. Its about a beautiful girl by name Devi, a pious Buddhist. King Ashoka fell in love with this girl and it is believed that it was this girl who motivated the king to construct such marvelous monuments in Sanchi. Sanchi’s fame set in to oblivion by the end of the 13th century and only in 1818 this renowned center of hinayana Buddhism was rediscovered. Despite the neglect for centuries, the architectural splendors of Sanchi still adorns the prime position and it offers the most redolent and eye-catching Buddhist site in India. Stupas and gateways of this world heritage site are the superb expressions of classiness in architecture. In fact these marvels of ancient Buddhist ethnicity herald a new arena in the field of temple architecture in India. Apart from the religious and historical aspect, Sanchi tenders a delightful view of the adjoining landscapes. If religion is not your passion, you could move onto other options since Sanchi is a fine place to just chill out and rest, or travel around.

HistoryEdit

Sanchi, the historical and pilgrim town in Madhya Pradesh is famous for its connection to Buddhism. Going back to the Sunga Period (2nd century BCE) the city was under the rule of Pusyamitra Sunga, who is believed to have destroyed the main stupa which was later rebuilt by his son Agnimitra. King Asoka, belonging to the Mauryan dynasty, built the giant stupa in the 3rd century. The Satavahana Period lasted around 70 BCE and it was during this time that the gateways and the banister were built. The abundant amounts of stone carvings depicting the life of Buddha were also built during this age. Not much of the history is known from then onwards. It was in the 12th century that the city saw the establishment of most of its temple. After the decline of Buddhism in India, most of the historical monuments of Sanchi dilapidated. The present town of Sanchi was brought back to glory by the British general Taylor, who discovered the site in 1818. Restoration of the site was commenced under the guidance of John Marshall in 1912 and was completed in 1919. The site gained the momentum of being UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1989.

HistoryEdit

Rajgir is a very ancient place referred to in the mythical period of Ramayana.. In ancient India it was known by several names, one being Rajgriha. The other ancient names were Vasumati, Barhadrathapura, Kusagrapura, Girivraja. Rajgriha (Rajgir) was the capital city of the Magadha empire for many centuries. There are several hills near Rajgriha called the Vaibhara, Ratna, Saila, Sona, Udaya, Chhatha and Vipula. Rajgir is linked with Vasu the fourth son of Brahma (creator) who is considered to have founded the old Girivraja. It is also linked with Brihadratha and Jarasandha. Bimbisara ruled over Magadh from 543-491 B.C, then Ajatasatru (491-459 B.C). The accounts of ancient Rajgir are given by the Chinese travellers and pilgrims Fa-hien and Hiuen Tsang. Buddhaghosha has also given accounts. Buddha lived in Rajgriha and gave many sermons here. Mahavira the twenty fourth Jain tirthankara also spent a long time here. Lord Mahavir performed Twelve ‘Chaturmas’ here and sprayed his spiritual ambrosia on this district. Of the Nearly seven lakh hermits and nuns devoted to Lord Mahavir, nearly one-fourth belonged to Rajgriha district. From this viewpoint it can be said that Lord Mahavir had a boundless influence on Rajgriha district. The twentieth Jain tirthankara Muni Suvrata is born here.
