Primarily an industrial city, Visakhapatnam, as per the Hindu Mythology, is the city named after the God Vaishaka and is popularly known as Vizag. Visakhapatnam city, head quarters of the Eastern Naval Command, has the biggest ship building yard in the country. The major port in Vizag handles huge volumes of Cargo every day. It is an industrial main centre in South India. Visakhapatnam has a rich cultural and historical heritage. Once part of the ancient empire of Kalinga, it has been ruled by eminent kings such as Ashoka and Krishnadeva Raya. It had also been a Dutch colony in the 18th century. Venkateswara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva on Venkateswara Konda; Church of the Virgin Mary on Ross hill and the tomb of a Muslim saint, Baba Ishaq Madina Dargah on Dargah Konda. The popular tourist attractions are Kailasagiri Hill Park, VUDA Park, Mudsarlova, Dantapuram, Simhachalam Temple, Rushikonda Beach and Araku, a scenic hill-station. The city boasts of a submarine museum known as ‘Smritika’ at Rama Krishna Beach, the first of its kind in South Asia.

Visakhapatnam (also known popularly as Vizag) is the second largest city in Andhra Pradesh. It is primarily an industrial city, but also attracts tourists due to its unspoilt sandy beaches, well built and maintained parks and nearby scenic areas, such as the Araku Valley. Visakhapatnam is named after the God of Valour, Visakha, the son of Shiva and Parvati and ruler of the planet Mars and the God of War. The region boasts a mention in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. According to the Ramayana, it is the place where Lord Rama meets his devotee, Shabari, who directed him to the mountains where Hanuman lives.

By Air : Visakhapatnam airport is connected to many cities in India including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad. Airport is nearly 16 km away from the heart of the city. Pre-paid taxi from airport to city charges about Rs 400.
By Train : Visakhapatnam has an important railway station lies on Chennai – Delhi main line. This station is connected with all cities in India by rail. Tourists can get direct trains from Delhi (Samta Express), Mumbai (Konark Express), Kolkata (Coromandel Exp), Chennai (Dbrg Ypr Expres) and Bangalore (Hwh Ypr Express).
By Bus : Vizag is well connected by the road transport public bus services. Many tourist bus service providers offer deluxe, super deluxe and A/C bus services from Visakhapatnam to many major cities in South and Central India, including Chennai, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Bangalore and Mumbai. These buses charge about Rs 4 per km.
By Taxi : Cabs are also available in the city of Vishakapatnam, and these are one of the safest modes of travel. Car charges are around Rs 13 per kilometer with Rs 35 for the first two kilometers. Cabs and auto rickshaws can be taken up from the railway station and bus stand.

By Other : Auto rickshaws are another option, preferred mode of commute in the city of Vishakapatnam.
