Karauli is considered one of the holiest cities in Rajasthan with a collection of more than almost 300 temples. Located almost 150 kms from Jaipur, the city founded in 1348 AD was earlier known as Kalyanpuri, after the local deity Kalyanji. The entire city is protected from all directions by a red sandstone wall. The wall is also strengthened by bastions at various points and gateways at strategic positions. The wall, though old still stands tall and dilapidated at a few spots. Famous for its pale red-stones Karauli boasts presence of some very memorable monuments like the famous temples of Kaila Devi, Madan Mohanji and many other historic structures. The countryside at Karauli is worth exploring for the secrets of past which it unravels to the insistent. The game sanctuary also provides an opportunity to board the jeeps and rumble across the safari. The Mahavir Jain temple revered by the Jain followers worldwide and the Kaila Devi Sancturary, an extension of the Ranthambore National Park is within a short distance from Karauli. It’s not only the temples, Sanctuary and the Fort that beckons one to Karauli. It’s the colourful festivals and fairs that are much sought after for the zest and revelry associated with it. The local markets are a must visit for the exclusive Karauli and Rajasthani fine art articles that they provide at rock bottom prices. The land of palaces, temples, fairs and a Sanctuary too, what more can one ask from this land of warriors? Karauli has extreme climates as in other cities of Rajasthan.

Karkala

India / Karnataka / Udupi / Karkala

Karkala, a historical town and pilgrim center for Jains and Hindus is a peaceful Udipi district in Karnataka. Its name is derived from the Kannada word karikallu which means black stones. Karkala is a tranquil town very well known for the Jain Basadis and the gigantic monolithic statue of Bahubali, which stands majestically in the heart of the city. Another main attraction here is the huge Chaturmukha Basti, a wonderful site. Karkala is a center of bubbling activity where agility and dedication combine to take a remarkable form. The visitors will be over whelmed with young zealous sculptors etching beautiful figures and bringing life to stones. Karkala, historically known as Pandyanagari or city of Pandya, was ruled in early 14th century by the chief having name Veera Pandya of Bhairarasa family, hailed from Humcha in Shimoga district. Being secular even at that time of point, these rulers equally considered all religions, although they were themselves dedicated Jains. The Goud-Saraswats who were fleeing from Portuguese harassment were welcomed by Karkala and the large temple of Venkataramana is built in this serene city during the common era 1537. Anantha Padmanabha temple devoted to Lord Vishnu, Chaturmukha Basadi and Neminath Basadi at Hiriangadi, assumed to be built as early as 16th century, are some of other temple attractions here. All these temples have fascinating histories and are celebrated for architectural brilliance. The visitors throng to the temple of Venkataramana during the festival of lights to see fantastic view of lights. This temple is attractive to many people and many find it irresistible to visit the temple regularly and receive the Lord’s blessings. The famous single stone statue of 42-foot high Gomateswara, also called as Lord Bahubali, is located very close. There are about 18 Jain shrines here, apart from several other temples, mosques and churches in and around Karkala. Karkala has many places of worship like the Jama Masjid at Salmaar, the Attur Church of St. Lawrence which was assumed to be built some centuries ago and Padutirupathi Sreenivasa Temple supposed to be more than 550 years old. Anekere Lake and Ramasamudra pond are some other scenic attractions here.

Karaikudi

India /Tamil Nadu / Sivaganga /Karaikudi

Karaikudi is the biggest city in the Sivaganga district located in the state of Tamil Nadu in the southern portion of India. An Indian magazine has listed this fine city as one of the five fastest growing vacation spots for tourists. Tourists like to visit this area for the old historic buildings that are there, the excellent shopping, and the outstanding local cuisine. Historically, this city played a major role in the momentous India freedom struggle. Karaikudi is traditionally part of the ancestral home of the Chettiyars. The Nattukottai Chettiyars was a prosperous banking community that was successful in overseas business in South and Southeast Asia during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is the members of this business community that built and then lived in many, but not all, of the historical buildings in the area. There are also several famous temples in the region as well that had nothing to do with the Chettiyars. Karaikudi is the largest of a total of 75 villages that are located in close proximity of each other and make up the entire homeland of the Nattukottai Chettiyars. This happening city has become a popular shooting spots for film makers in both the Tamil and the Telugu film industries.
