Nathula Pass

The Nathula Pass is situated in the state of Sikkim near the Chinese border. It is located along the ancient Silk Route and it is a popular tourist destination for many people across the country. The Nathula region is a border trading post for India and China. Many pilgrims from the country of Tibet pass through the Nathula Pass to visit the numerous religious sites that are present here. The place can be visited only on certain days of the week and there is a restriction on the number of vehicles that can travel to the place on any particular day. Foreign tourists are also not allowed to visit the place and they can travel only up to the Tsongo Lake. There are numerous waterfalls that are located along the route from Gangtok to Nathula. The drive from Gangtok can be an exhilarating experience as one can get a view of many snow clad peaks along the way. One has to climb up a set of steps to reach the pass itself and you can engage in conversation with both Indian and Chinese soldiers. SUVs that have permits are the only vehicles that are allowed in the region.

Nathula Pass which is situated on the border of India and China was also known as Silk Route as it was one of the most important route of trade between the silk traders from Tibet and Sikkim. Nathula Pass is a mountain pass in Eastern Sikkim, on the Indo-Chinese border that serves as the trade link between India and China Nathula Highway is one of the most beautiful mountain roads of the world. Nearly, 70 kms from Gangtok, crossing the azure blue Tsomgo Lake (also known as Changu Lake) and the new Baba Harbhajan Mandir, the road is an adventure itself. The border checkpost at Nathula Pass is marked by the Border Gates of India and China, a war memorial and an Exhibition Centre of India Army. On a clear day, you can also enjoy great views of Mt. Chomolhari from Nathula Pass. Even though Nathula Pass is a border checkpost, there is no “No Mans Land”. In Nathula Pass the border consists of a barbed wire where armies of both India and China, guard their side of land. Tourists need to abandon their vehicles, few paces away from the Nathula Pass to reach the actual border. Due to the Indo China War, this legendary trade route was closed down in 1961. Recently, after a negotiation between the two countries, trading on some commodities has been resumed recently.

By Air : The closest airport is situated in the town of Bagdogra and one has to reach here and take a taxi to Gangtok and switch to a four wheel drive vehicle to reach the Nathula Pass. The airport is located around 84 kilometers away from the town of Gangtok. It is well connected to places such as Guwahati, New Delhi and Kolkata. There are two daily flights from Delhi to Bagdogra. Taxis are available from the airport and they cost around Rs 7 per kilometer for the trip.

By Train : The nearest railhead is situated in the town of Jalpaiguri and this is at a distance of around 98 kilometers from Gangtok. Trains ply from cities such as Chennai, Delhi, Howrah and Alipur to Jalpaiguri. Second class tickets from Delhi cost around Rs 440. Taxis are available at the station and this is the quickest mode of transport to the town of Gangtok.

Nandankanan is a national park located in the State of Orissa. Nandankanan is the first zoological park to become a member of World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It was established in 1960 and serves as an open sanctuary as well as a zoo. It also has a botanical garden that is located within the premises. The national park is known for its population of white tigers and it is one of the few zoos in the country to have a substantial white tiger population. It is also home to 43 different species of mammals and 23 varieties of reptiles. The zoo is also known for its breeding program. The program has been successful in breeding panthers, tigers, gharial crocodiles and other animals. A unique feature of the zoo is the adopting an animal program. People can adopt six endangered species such as white tiger, orangutan, rhinoceros and a few other animals. The zoo also enjoys the distinction of having the lowest mortality rate for animals in captivity. Along with the successful breeding program, The National Park is one of the most successful in the country. The State of Bank of India is among the first to have adopted an animal. And it is continuing to support the program.

Nandankanan Zoological Park is located 20 kms ahead of the capital city Bhubaneswar in Orissa. Acclaimed as one of the most wellmaintained zoos in India, Nandan Kanan is an open-air zoo carved from natural forests. The zoo also includes a botanical garden. Manas National Park and wildlife sanctuary is located in the foothills of the Himalayas in the state of. The Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it is also a tiger reserve. The park has a substantial population of elephants as well. There are many endangered species of animals that can be seen in the wildlife sanctuary. Some of them are lispid hares, assam roofed turtles, pygmy hogs and golden langurs.The park was previously a hunting reserve of the Cooch Behar Royal Family. There are many villages that can be seen in the fringes of the national park as well. One village is located in the vicinity of the park itself. One can also stay at the forest bungalow inside the sanctuary. However accommodation options are limited. There are two more lodges on the periphery of the sanctuary. A popular activity in the park is taking a raft ride on the Manas River and this gives one an opportunity to see many animals in their natural setting. Forest safaris can also be arranged and these are a good way to see the sanctuary. Elephant rides are also available for short distances and these are a popular option among the children. The climate in the national park is a semi tropical type of climate and the place gets extensive rainfall during the monsoon season. Conditions can be hot and humid during the summer months. Winters are mild and temperatures are much lower during this period. The best time to visit the place is from October to March.

Mana is a small pilgrim village that is located in the state of. The village is present near the religious site of Badrinath. By Air : The domestic airport in Mangalore is the nearest airport, and flight fares will range from Rs 1500 to 4000. Buses will b available from Mangalore, which is located fifty kilometers away.

By Train : The nearest railway station to the beach town of Malpe is the Udupi Railway Station. The railway station in Udupi is a prominent station along the Konkan Railway Line, so regular trains will be available from Mangalore, Goa and Kochi and Mumbai. Train fares will range from Rs 200 to 1500 depending on the distance covered and the class of travel availed.

By BUS : Malpe is well connected by road to the town of Udupi, and many buses ply from Udupi to Malpe. The town of Udupi is around four kilometers (4 kms) away from Malpe and you can take buses to Udupi in order to travel to Malpe from there. This is the easiest road route that you can take. Udupi is located along NH17 and regular buses will be available from Karkala, Sringeri, Shimoga and Dharamstala.

By Air : The closest airport is located in Pantnagar. The drive time from the airport to Mallital is around two hours and taxis are available outside the airport. The Pantnagar Airport is served by two airline operators and has good connectivity to Delhi. Taxis from the airport cost around Rs 1200 for the trip.

By Train : The nearest railway station is located at Kathgodam. The station is situated around 35 km away from the place. It has good connectivity to many places and receives frequent trains from Delhi. Tickets from Delhi to Kathgodam cost around Rs 150 for a non A/C sleeper class birth. A/C three tier tickets cost around Rs 400. Taxis charge approximately Rs 500 for the trip.

By BUS : Nainital has regular connectivity from nearby places. Private and government buses are available from Delhi. Private bus operators charge Rs 450 for a non A/C bus. Some operators have Volvo buses and they cost around Rs 900. These are much more comfortable.
