HistoryEdit

Malacca is one of the most popular tourist destinations within Malaysia. Every evening the famous Jonker Street night market is buzzing with tourists from all over the world. Malacca was founded around 1400 by a former prince from Sumatra (who ended up in Malacca during an escape attempt in that area). Malacca turned out to have a very good strategic position, and not long after the foundation the influx of merchant ships from India and China started. During that time Malacca grew into one of the major ports in South-East Asia today. In 1511 the Portuguese traders first set foot on the Malaccan soil. In 1641 the Portuguese gave up their power struggle (and war) with the Dutch and from that time onwards Malacca was under Dutch reign. Only a few years later, the English gained control over the area (after the Netherlands traded this region with the English for parts of Indonesia). The British rule lasted until 1957, when Malaysia was formed and Malacca continued as a semi autonomous province.

How to ReachEdit

By Air : Malacca International Airport has been renovated in 2009 to be able to cater for international flights. Currently it can handle up to 1.5 million passengers annually. The airport however stays behind many other smaller airports in Malaysia in terms of traffic; as not many airlines flies to Malacca. This is also due to the fact that the international airport of Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) is only 1,5 hours away. From the airport you can easily take a bus to Malacca; many busses depart from KLIA to Malacca on a daily basis. Currently only 3 airlines fly from Malacca Airport to Indonesia.

By Train : Though Malacca has no train station, the main train(s) between Singapore in the south and Bangkok in the north (with Kuala Lumpur as one of the main stops) do stop nearby Malacca at Tampin station. From there you can either take the bus or a taxi to Malacca.

By BuS : Malacca can also be explored by bus as tourists can visit the historical sites of Malacca by traveling in a red double decker bus for only RM5 per person per day. The great thing about this ‘Malacca City Tour’ is that you can hop off at a historical site and hop on again on the next bus to visit another historical site. There is also the ‘Panorama Melaka’ single decker bus that takes passengers to numermous other interesting places within and around Malacca. The fare for this bus is RM2 per person per day; you can go to Malacca Sentral, Malacca library, Malacca Hospital and many other places (this bus also does the ‘less touristic route’). There are numerous places where you can start the tour; offical start for Panorama Melaka is at the Malacca Sentral Bus Station. Check this map for more information on routes of the busses. Operating hours are between 7am and 10pm daily. The double decker bus will depart every 45 minutes from a particular stop along the route, the panorama bus every 20 minutes.

By Taxi : N.A

By Other : Another way to get to Malacca is by rental car. It is easy to rent a car in Malaysia. Numerous car rental companies have special pick up locations throughout the country.

By Air : The nearest major airport is Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB / WMSA). This airport has international and domestic flights from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and is 16 km from the center of Shah Alam, Malaysia.

By Train : Shah Alam is about 20 km west of Kuala Lumpur and a part of the urban sprawl of Klang Valley. The KTM Komuter line from Kuala Lumpur to Klang stops in Shah Alam, but the station is not particularly conveniently located. The 2 stations which will be most convenient to get to the city center would be to stop by either at the Batu Tiga station or Shah Alam station which is located in Section 19. Particularly the Batu Tiga station is nearby Section 13.

By BuS : Shah Alam bus terminal is handling express busses to and from north and south. It is located at Jalan Jenulung Seksyen 17 Shah Alam next to Treatment and Rehabilitation Method Centre. There is no LRT station and the best way to get there are by taxis or intercity bus.

By Taxi : A taxi has to travel a long distance just to pick you up. Unless he is already in the area, one would be very hesitant to drive all the way in. Most people who stay in that area drive, so that would not be many taxis heading into that area.
On top of that, during peak hours and changing of shift, or rainy days, taxis can be scarce.
The larger radio taxi providers are Sunlight and Public Cab.

By Other : There are 5 different highways you can use to get to Shah Alam if you want to drive yourself:
1) Federal Highway
2) New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE)
3) Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS)
4) Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE)
5) North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE)

How to ReachEdit

By Air : The nearest major airport is Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB / WMSA). This airport has international and domestic flights from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and is 18 km from the center of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

By Train : T he LRT Putra line is quick and easy to use and will take you to the centre of KL From the Hilton in PJ the nearest station is Taman Jaya. Turn left from the entrance and walk past the Nestle headquarters walking uphill. As yo clear the buildings you will see the overhead LRT line. Follow the line until you come to the station. Useful stations along the route are KL Sentral link with the KTM railway, Pasar Seni for Chinatown is handy for the craft market and Petaling Street Pasar Malam (night market). If you are a shopaholic KLCC is probably the place for you to get off and visit the malls in this area. It is also a good place to see the famed Petronas towers.

By BuS : The introduction of the Intra Kota bus system by DRB-Hicom saw the replacement of Sri Jaya and the mini-buses by the early 1990s. At the same time, some of the Petaling Jaya-Kuala Lumpur bus routes were serviced by Metrobus.

By Taxi : Private van or AUV service is cheaper as prices here are cheap since gasoline prices are subsidized in Malaysia, where a liter of premium unleaded gasoline is ony RM 2.15. There are many Tour Companies around Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya offering this service that goes vice versa to both areas. There are two kinds of private van tours, the first one is via a tour company private van tour of which the entrance fees of the attractions and or lunch is included (if you booked a whole day tour, which is different from the half day tour and full day tour as half day tours lasts 4 to 5 hours while the full day tour lasts 8 to 10 hours) and the cost is about 250 to 300 RM per person, depending on the number of locations visited like for example: half day kuala lumpur or whole day kuala lumpur tour, whole day tour of Sunway Pyramid Lagoon, KL or Petaling Jaya to Malacca, etc. Or you can hire the private van with the driver cum tour guide in one and the entrances to all attaction you would go wii be paid by your own pocket. A whole day tour without paid entrances to attractions is about 180 to 200 RM per person

By Other : The LRT is versatile as it takes you all the way to the suburban parts of KL. But as far as travelling within PJ is concerned, it adequately takes to you Taman Jaya,Taman Bahagia and Kelana Jaya. Prices are alright but they are constantly on the rise. Arm yourself with a Touch n Go card and you cannot go wrong. Else it is great to go by car (taxi fares could be exorbitant) and I would give the busses a miss.

HistoryEdit

Kuala Lumpur has its origins in the 1850s, when the Malay Chief of Klang, Raja Abdullah bin Raja Jaafar Raja Abdullah, hired some Chinese labourers to open new and larger tin mines for tin prospectors. The miners landed at the confluence of Sungai Gombak (previously known as Sungai Lumpur, meaning “muddy river”) and Sungai Klang (Klang River) to open mines at Ampang, Pudu and Batu. These mines developed into a trading post that became a frontier town.
