Putrajaya

Malaysia /Putrajaya/Putrajaya

Putrajaya is a planned city, 25 km south of Kuala Lumpur, that serves as the federal administrative centre of Malaysia. The seat of government was shifted in 1999 from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya, due to overcrowding and congestion in the Kuala Lumpur area. Nevertheless, Kuala Lumpur remains Malaysia’s national capital, being the seat of the King and Parliament, as well as the country’s commercial and financial centre. Putrajaya was the brainchild of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad. In 2001, Putrajaya became Malaysia’s third Federal Territory after Kuala Lumpur and Labuan.

How to ReachEdit

By Air : The nearest airport is Kuala Lumpur International Airport. A coupon or metered budget taxi to or from KLIA will take 30 minutes and cost around RM60. Alternatively, you can take the KLIA Transit from the airport to Putrajaya station and transfer to a taxi.

By Train : For public transport the fastest choice is the KLIA Transit connecting Kuala Lumpur’s Sentral train station to its airport, which stops halfway in between at Putrajaya. Trains run every 30 minutes, take 20 minutes and the list price is RM 9.50 one-way. Putrajaya tour return tickets are no longer available.
Note: The high-speed KLIA Express is not to be confused with KLIA Transit. KLIA Express, unlike KLIA Transit, goes from the KL Sentral train station to KLIA and vice versa non-stop, which means the train just goes past by the Putrajaya train station. Do not ride KLIA Express if you’re heading for Putrajaya.

By BuS : Bus service is provided from 6:30AM until 10PM to and from Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, Serdang commuter station, Sinar Kota and Pasar Seni LRT station in Kuala Lumpur. The bus fare for one-way is around RM 3.50 and takes about 30 minutes-one hour, depends on the traffic flow. Usually, on non-working days the time the buses take to arrive at Putrajaya will be much faster, but the frequency of the buses will be accordingly reduced. The new Express network by Rapid KL links KL Sentral to Putrajaya with only RM 5 for an unlimited daily pass. All public buses from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya drop and pick up passengers from the bus terminal beside the train station (Putrajaya Sentral), which is at least 5 km from the core district.Shuttle buses to/from KL are provided by some hotels for guests, such as Shangri-la.

By Taxi : Coupon taxis from Kuala Lumpur’s KL Sentral cost a fixed RM45, but otherwise you’ll have to try out your bargaining skills – figure on RM40-50, and expect to pay more at night.

By Other : Construction of the Putrajaya Monorail has been halted until the occupancy of the Core District becomes higher.

By Air : The Kuala Lumpur International Airport at Sepang is about 90 km or 45 minutes away from us. Direct International flights from major cities around the world fly into Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Malaysia Airlines System (MAS) flies to 74 international destinations worldwide.

By Train : Although Port Dickson has a rail link, there are no longer any train services. The nearest train station is in Seremban which can be easily reached from Kuala Lumpur. You have to catch a bus or taxi from Seremban to Port Dickson.

By BuS : Frequent buses – both direct express which use the highway and local which use the old toll-free road – link Port Dickson with Seremban. Travel time is about one hour and cost RM4. On weekdays there only seems to be one company offering buses between Seremban and Port Dickson, one per hour. If coming from other parts of Malaysia, the easiest way by bus will be to travel via Seremban.
Local buses also link Port Dickson with Sungai Pelek in Sepang district in Selangor, where there are connections to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. To the south, local buses go to Pengkalan Kempas and Tanjung Agas (these buses actually go right up to Kuala Linggi in Malacca) where there are connections to Malacca city.If coming from Malacca via Seremban by bus, allow about 4-5 hours to get to Port Dickson.

By Taxi : Taxi rank is right next to the bus station. Happily, it seems to be the only main town in Malaysia where taxis get commission for taking you to certain hotels. The taxis don’t have meters and they charge per head. Short distances are 2RM, all the way from Batu 10 to the Bus Terminal is 3RM. But if you start at the Bus Terminal, they may charge for 4 Peoples regardless how many you are. You shouldn’t pay more than 15RM to get as far as Blue Lagoon/lighthouse which is a bit down at Batu 10. There is also a local bus that toodles along the coast. The fare is 1RM to 2RM. From the Bas Terminal to Batu 10 (closest to the Blue Lagoon) it is 2RM. It takes just over an hour by car or taxi to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Port Dickson along the North-South Expressway.

By Other : Daily ferries connect Port Dickson with Dumai in Sumatra, Indonesia. The Acob Express (Jetty office Tel: +60-6-6471599) leaves from the jetty in the middle of town at 1030. Return trips depart Dumai at 1300. Tickets cost RM80/150 one-way/return.

How to ReachEdit

By Air : The easiest and quickest way to get to Kuantan is by air as there are numerous daily flights from Kuala Lumpur. Two airlines operate on this route; Malaysia Airlines and Firefly. Firefly also flies between Kuantan and Singapore. Malaysia Airlines departs from KLIA (domestic) and Firefly departs from Subang Airport. Unfortunately, Air Aisia does not fly to Kuantan yet, but we hope they will in the future. Southwest of Kuantan lies Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport. It is 15 kilometer from Kuantan city center.

By Train : N.A

By BuS : The cheapest way to reach Kuantan is by coach. There are numerous bus operators that have daily busses driving between Kuantan and many other locations within Peninsular Malaysia. From the main bus terminal Puduraya in Kuala Lumpur a couple of busses a day leave towards Kuantan. The trip from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan by bus will take around 4 hours. Usually the costs of traveling by bus are marginal. You leave Kuantan from a central bus station Terminal Makmur (Jalan Stadium). Do not save on a trip bus (unless it is your primary goal to travel as cheap as possible); because you can travel first class for little money to Kuala Lumpur.

By Taxi : Another way to get to Kuantan is by rental car. It is easy to rent a car in Malaysia. Numerous car rental companies have special pick up locations throughout the country. Hawk Malaysia for example has a drop off point at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport, so you can easily pick up the car at an Hawk office in Kuala Lumpur (KLIA or city center) and drive with it to Kuantan. From Kuala Lumpur it is only a 4 hour drive to Kuantan; the trip will be over toll highways (total trip wil cost approximately RM30). You might want to consider a short stopover at another destination on the way to the city. Many tourists combine their trip to Kuantan with a short visit to Genting Highlands, a trip to Taman Negara or the Elephant shelter at Kuala Gandah.

By Other : Kuantan Port is a multipurpose port serving Kuantan and the east coast region.

Also located here is the Puskarini or Holy Pond where the Buddha’s mother took the ritual dip prior to his birth and where he, too, had his first bath, as well as the remains of Kapilvastu palace. At other sites near Lumbini, earlier Buddhas were, according to tradition, born, achieved ultimate awakening and finally relinquished earthly form.

Patan

Nepal / Lalitpur /Patan

Patan, the oldest of all the three cities of Kathmandu valley. It is the best known for its artistic heritage. It is probably one of the oldest Buddhist City in the world. The city is situated on a plateau across Bagmati River. Another name of Patan, is Lalitpur. The city is surrounded by 4 Stupas as 4 corners of Patan, one at each corner of its cardinal points. These stupas are said to have been built by the famous Emperor Ashoka. This is one of the most elegant architectural treasures of which Patan is very proud. About the beauty of Patan, a western lady writer has to say this – “Patan means eternity itself and Patan Durbar Square is the spectacular sight of Asia indeed”. Really it is full of Hindu temples and Buddhist monuments with bronze gateways, guardian deities and wonderful carvings and many visitors come here to see the these monuments. Patan Durbar square is the famous visiting place. The square is full of ancient places, temples, and shrines noted for their exquisite carvings.

HistoryEdit

Langkawi is an island of legends. Its name is believed to have originated from the abundance of eagles on the island: helang (eagle in Malay) and kawi (marble in Sanskrit), begets the moniker helang-kawi which was eventually toned down to Langkawi. The main settlement of locals is in Kuah, a dusty town noticeably beloved for its array of duty-free stores and Chinese seafood restaurants. Other popular areas include the Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah stretch, the quite strips of Pantai Kok and Padang Matsirat and the exclusive beaches of Datai Bay and Tanjung Rhu.

How to ReachEdit

By Air : Malaysian Airlines (MAS) and Air Asia operate daily flights to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur. International travelers from certain places such as Osaka, Taipei and London can connect with MAS flights directly from their country or other airlines, depending on their availability in that particular region. Air Asia is the airborne version of a cheap local minibus, so you can’t go wrong if you’re looking for a good deal without the frills. Visitors from Singapore can use Silk Air which also flies directly to Langkawi daily.

By Train : The Express Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur promises a comfortable and economical journey up to Alor Setar (Kedah) and/or Arau(Perlis). From Alor Setar or Arau, buses and taxis are available to Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis respectively, from where the Ferry Services take you to the island.

By BuS : You can choose to rough it out and wait for a bus instead, but their stops are limited to a few places and the wait is long. There is a bus station in front of the City Bayview Hotel and they run from the jetty to the centre of town. The only other destination for buses is Pantai Cenang. However buses are few.

By Taxi : A taxi from the Airport to Pantai Cenang costs RM20 (Dec 2013). You can buy a coupon at the taxi desk in the airport. From the ferry terminal to Pantai Cenang the price is RM24. For those arriving at the Kuah Jetty and going into Kuah Town, the price is RM8. All taxis work to a fixed price system, a fare from one part of the island to another is always the same price. This system results in higher prices, but very few problems since the taxi drivers are paid well enough and do not try and rip off tourists or participate in any of the dodgier shenanigans seen elsewhere in South East Asia. The result is a reliable and trustworthy, but more expensive taxi system.

By Other : Langkawi Ferry operates fast A/C boats from Kuala Perlis (RM18, 75 min), Kuala Kedah (RM23, 105 min), Penang (RM63.5, 165 min) (the ferry is freezing cold, so bring warm clothes), and Satun (RM30 or THB300, 75 min, last boat departs 4PM).
Telaga Harbour operates ferries from Ko Lipe, Thailand twice per day during the high season, at 9:30AM and 2:30PM (RM128 1-way, RM248 return, 75 min). These boats dock at the south end of Pattaya Beach. Bookings can be made online.
The fast boat is also known as the ‘vomit comet’ due to the number of people succumbing to sea sickness. Bring lots of water and be prepared for a bumpy ride. Renting a car or motorbike/scooter is highly recommended due to lack of public transport. This can now be done at the airport from the departure lounge, and the rate is reasonable, 50 RM for a small car) and also from the port complex, or from shops on Pantai Cenang. Refrain yourself from renting from touts, as many are operating illegally without permits and usually without insurance.
Renting an air-conditioned mid-sized sedan costs RM70-RM150 per day (depending on model, condition and length of stay) and a 150 cc motorbike/scooter costs RM40 to RM45 per day. Cheaper but usually very used and older are the semi-automatic 115 cc bikes for RM25 a day. A tired Proton with in Pantai Cenang maybe around RM60-90/day. You can rent bicycles in many of the hotels. Expect to pay between RM10-30 per day.
