The main cave has a naturally formed rock arch that is considered a geographical marvel. The arch measures approximately 200x16x4 feet and has no support of any kind at all. Travelling to the cave is an experience in itself as one has to journey through river Krishna. Exploring the 150 meter depth of the cave is an experience that is sure to leave the travelers spellbound.

Mallikarjuna constitutes one of the 12 Jyotirlingam shrines of Shiva and is one of the greatest Shaivaite shrines in India. The presiding deities of Mallikarjuna Temple are Mallikarjuna (Shiva) and Bhramaramba (Devi). The temple sculptures narrate in stone, epics from thre great Hindu epics-Ramayana nand Mahabharata. This temple is considered very holy and is dedicated to Mallikarjuna Swamy and Bhramaramba. One unique feature of the temple is that all the devotees who visit the temple are allowed to touch the idol which is not prevalent in any other temple. The temple is located at a distance of 245 km from Hyderabad. The Sree Sailam temple has rich sculptural work, fort like walls and towers. The temple is built in Dravidian style. According to popular legends, the religious leader had visited the temple and had composed his famous Sivananda Lahiri. It is also believed that Goddess Durga had taken the form of a bee and worshiped Lord Shiva here and selected this holy place as her abode.

HistoryEdit

Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, Srisailam is one of the 18 Maha Sakti Peetha. The mythology of Daksha yaga and Sati’s self immolation resulted in the emergence of Sri Parvati in the place of Sati Devi and making Shiva a house holder. This mythology is the story behind the origin of Sakti Peethas. They are holy abodes of Sakti formed due the falling of Sati Devi’s corpse when Shiva carried it and wandered. It is believed that Sati Devi’s Upper lip has fallen here. According to Shiva Purana, when Lord Ganesh was married of before his Kartikeya, and because of this brother Kartikeya became angry. Despite being stopped and consoled by his parents Shiv-Parvati, Kartikeya went away to the Kraunch Mountain. Even the Gods went and tried consoling Kartikeya but all their efforts were in vain. Because of this incident Shiv-Parvati were very sad and both decided that they would themselves go to Kraunch Mountain. However, when Kartikeya came to know that his parents have arrived, he went away. Eventually Lord Shiva assumed the form of Jyotirlinga and resided on that mountain by the name of Mallikarjuna. Mallika means Parvati, while Arjuna is another name of Shiva. In this way both Shiva and Parvati came to reside in this linga. It is said that by merely seeing the tip of mountain one is emancipated from all his sins and worries. The person becomes free from the vicious cycle of life and death.

The reason why this dam assumes a very important place in the history of the state is because of its remarkable potential to generate hydro-electric power. In terms of production of hydroelectric power, this dam is the 3rd largest in the country. It is constructed across the famous Krishna River and is located in the Kurnool district. The base for the dam is the deep, green and dense Nallamalla Hills. The dam is quite big as it has around 12 radial crest gates. This dam stands at a whopping 300m above sea level and is a staggering 476 feet tall. Its length stretches to 1680 feet and the reservoir capacity is of 800sq.km. The main reason for the huge hydroelectric power generation is the presence of 6 Francis pump turbines of 150MW that are reversible on the left side of the river bank and 7 Francis turbine generators of 110MW on the right side of the river bank.

HistoryEdit

Srisailam Dam is built on the Krishna River and is 512 m long. It is set amidst beautiful natural scenery – ghats, cliffs, craggy ridges, plateaus and dense forests. It has twelve crest gates to hold a maximum water level of 885 ft (270 m). It has a live storage of 274 thousand million cubic feet. This reservoir was originally designed for hydropower generation only but was later converted to a multi-purpose facility for water supply and irrigation. Due to the construction of Srisailam Hydro Electric Project across river Krishna, nearly 102 villages in both Kurnool and Mahboobnagar Districts located along the banks of the rivers Krishna, Tungabhadra, Bhavanasi and their tributaries were submerged.
