Mahasthangarh

Bangladesh /Rajshahi Division /Bogra District /Mahasthan

Mahasthangarh is spreading along the western bank of Karatoya river is situated about 8 miles due north of the Bogra town. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Garh means fort or fortified city, and the garh of Mahastan is considered the oldest city in Bangladesh. It dates back to at least the 3rd century BC, and is an easy half-day trip from Bogra. Very few ancient structures remain, so what you’ll see is essentially an archaeological site consisting of foundations and hillocks, which merely hint at past riches. Nevertheless, the rural setting is incredibly peaceful so even if you aren’t blown away by the historical remains, this still makes a pleasant excursion. The principal site, the Citadel, contains traces of the ancient city. Many other sites in the vicinity are lumped together under the name Mahasthangarh. The whole area is rich in Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim sites, but most have all but vanished. Buddhists were here until at least the 11th century; their most glorious period was the 8th to the 11th centuries, when the Buddhist Pala emperors of North Bengal ruled. It is from this period that most of the visible remains belong.

Mainimati Ruins

Bangladesh /Chittagong Division /Comilla District /Comilla

Mainimati Ruins are situated approximately 70 kilometers southeast of the city of Dhaka. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Mainimati Ruins are a selection of more than fifty scattered Buddhist sites that enjoy special significance as a center of Buddhist culture. Many of the ruins date back to between the 7th and 12th centuries. Most of the buildings that have been excavated were completely constructed of hand-made baked bricks – something which must have taken much time and dedication and which has certainly lasted longer than other, less important structures that were commonly built at the time. The three most important of the various religious ruins are Salban Vihara, Kotila Mura and Charpatra Mura. Salban Vihara is an impressive structure that measures approximately 170 square meters in size. The building features a monastery that faces onto a temple situated in the centre of the courtyard. Excavations at Salban Vihara have revealed a wealth of different artifacts, including coins, jewelry, terracotta plaques, bronze statues, a bronze casket and votive stupas that have been embossed with Buddhist inscriptions. The various finds are on display to the public at a nearby museum. Kotila Mura is just as interesting. The structure is dedicated to the ‘Three Jewels of Buddhism’, namely Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Three large stupas representing each of these deities are contained within the ruins at Kotila Mura. Charpatra Mura is seen as an important site because it was here that four royal copper-plate decrees were discovered. Three of these belonged to Chandra rulers while the fourth is associated with Sri Viradhara Deva, a Hindu king that lived sometime later.

Kallol Tirth Tank, Tuljapur

Kallol Tirth Tank, Tuljapur

HistoryEdit

Kallol Teerth is a large rectangular water reservoir of forty feet by twenty and is believed to be a fourteenth century construction. The tank is walled off from all sides and steps are built to lead down to the water making it easier for pilgrims to take a holy bath. A holy bath in this teerth is the first rite performed by the devotees, as an act of purification of body and soul. It is believed that, on an invitation from Bramha, the waters from all sacred rivers like Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati, as also waters from mountain ranges Himalayas, Sahyadris, Vindhyas, Malay and Trikut submerged into in this Kallola Tirth. The waters of rivers descended in great torrents in to the tank creating a great kolahal or noise; hence it was named “kallol teerth”.

Gomukh Tirth,Tuljapur

Gomukh Tirth,Tuljapur

HistoryEdit

Gomukh Tirth is a famous waterfall in the region which has a height of about 6 ft. The water comes out of a stone structure that resembles mouth of a cow. There are many mythological stories behind this Tirth. The one commonly believed is that of a mahant called Garibanath, who wanted to go to Ganges for the holy bath unbelieving the fact that water from Gomukh originates from Ganges. Then, in order to convince him that the water flowing from the Gomukh teerth is sourced from the Great Ganga itself. The Goddess performed a miracle by which a stick and lemon he threw in Ganges at Varanashi came through Gomukh at Tuljapur.
