Agam Kuan meaning the “unfathomable well” has immense historical substance. It is associated with the rule of Mauryan Emperor King Ashoka and is one the oldest archaeological sites in Patna. Many legends are attached to the site and while some regard it as a torture chamber, some refer to it as the well where King Ashoka threw his brothers in order to attain the throne. Near this site is the Temple of Shitala Devi, which is known for remedial cures for small pox and chicken pox.

Agam Kuan is approximately 105 ft deep and with a perimeter extending over 20 ft. It’s upper half is encased with a 44 ft brick layer and secures it with wooden rings. The structure of the surface is constructed with eight arched windows. According to legends, Emperor Ashoka had this well built for the purpose of torturing people. Popular folklore also states that this was the well, where King Ashoka drowned his 99 brothers in order to get the throne of the Mauryan Empire.

Tripurantaka temple is an ancient temple situated on the north-east of the Balligave town. The temple’s main deity is Tripurantaka, a form of lord Shiva. The kings of the Western Chalukya dynasty worshiped Shiva, the Hindu God. Hence, they built many temples dedicated to lord Shiva. This temple is one among them. Additionally, they were tolerant towards Vaishnava or Jain faith also. Accordingly, one can find the sculptures of other Hindu Gods Brahma and Vishnu along with Shiva above the shrine’s entrance. The temple represents the architectural style of Chalukyas. The pillars and door frames bear a resemblance to the earliest works at Belur and Halebid. Additionally there are erotic sculptures on the friezes of the temple’s exterior wall.

The large temple complex houses three temples dedicated to Rameshwara (Lord Shiva), Veerabhadreshwara (warrior form of Lord Shiva) and Parvati Devi (consort of Lord Shiva). The central shrine is the one dedicated to Lord Shiva and so the temple is popularly known as Rameshwara Temple.The temple is cited on an elevated platform in the centre and a tall dwajasthamban is seen just outside the Veerabhadra temple. Balligavi was an important city during the 11th – 12th century Western Chalukya rule. The building material used is soapstonehe temple is protected as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple is in trikuta style (three shrined, each with a superstructure or sikhara) with the shrines facing west, north and south. The western shrine has a vestibule where as the other two shrines have a “half hall”. It is the oldest example of such a combinational style in Karnataka according to reports from the Mysore archaeological department. The temple faces east and has a stepped entrance on three sides. The entrance on the sides is a Western Chalukya idiom. The entrance to the shrine which faces east has a Nandi, the bull and a celestial attendant of Shiva.

The Lakshmi Narasimha Temple is built on a Nakshtra style platform, and is around three feet high. The architecture of Lakshmi Narasimha Temple built by the Hoysala rulers is marvelous and worth admiring. The Dwajasthambam of the temple stands tall in front of the temple, outside in the compound wall. Apart from this, there’s a stone pillar on a small pedestal. The temple has three Gopurams and hence called by the name Threekutachal Temple. The outer walls of the temple bear great detailed carvings in Hoysala style. A flight of five steps will lead you up the platform with three of them leading to the temple.

When he was resting below a tree, mother sigandureshwari came into his dream and asked him to build a temple for her. He went and told his experience to a Brahmin “Duggajja” in his village. Both of them finally built a temple and Duggajja became the priest of the temple and Sheshappa became the Managing Trustee.

Ikkeri is only vestige of its former greatness is the temple of Aghoreshvara a large and well proportioned stone-building. On the floor in front of the shrine are the effigies of three of the Keladi chiefs, doing obeisance, with the name inscribed above each. The distance between the central pillars was adopted as the standard measure for garden land. A rod of this length, equal to 18 feet 6 inches, was the space called daya allowed for one tree, and the shist was fixed on 1,000 such daya at various rates constructed in a mixed style with a unique conception. The Aghoresvara templeis a large structure, built of granite, in a uniquely mixed style that incorporates elements from Vijayanagara, the Karnata Dravida style of the Later Chalukyas and Hoysalas, as well as the architecture of the Deccan Sultanates. The temple faces north and has lofty roof and ornamental doorways on the west, north and east, the north doorway being the best with two elephants at the sides.At present it is maintained by Archaeological Survey of India.
