The Bawdi (Tank) was built by Ali Adil Shah in the 16th century. The fall of the Vijayanagar Empire saw a huge influx of people into Bijapur which witnessed new settlements coming up within the walled city raising the need for better infrastructure and water supply. The tank claims to have a storage capacity of 20 million litres of water which later on became a model for many other tanks constructed in the city. A grandeur complex came up around it, which was mainly used to house the maintenance staff though members of the royal family occasionally using it for recreation.

Mehtar Mahal is the ornamental gateway located in Bijapur which leads to an exquisitely crafted mosque and a beautiful garden. Mehtar Mahal is also known as the ‘Sweeper’s Palace’ and is believed to be dating back to 1620 AD. The entry gate of Mehtar Mahal is built in Indo-Saracenic style. The place is three-storied and has beautifully carved arches. The grand minarets of the Mahal are finely designed with pictures of birds and rows of swans that would make it a picture perfect shot for a photographer. The carvings are crafted in Hindu architectural style with brackets that support balconies and stone trellis work. Mehtar Mahal has a mosque which is believed to be built by the sweeper of the palace by collecting gold coins that were showered upon him by the King. The ground floor of the mosque has a staircase that leads to a room above. The most stunning among all the carvings is the motif of lion and elephant. It is a perfect blend of perfection and art that takes you back to the time when artists came from across the world to create such masterpieces with their handiwork. Mehtar Mahal, meaning a ‘Sweeper’s Palace’, is believed to be dating from about 1620 AD, the palace was built by a sweeper with the handsome gift he received from the Ibrahim Adil Shah I. Entrance to this ornamental gateway leads to a mosque, and to the garden outside, which displays Indo-Saracenic architecture. It was decorated with stone bracket carvings, to support the balconies, and Hindu style stone trellis. Carved birds and rows of swans adorn the stone brackets. Highlight of the mahal is the stone elephant and lion motif.

The Ibrahim-Rauza, consists of his tomb and mosque within a square compound, both rising face to face from a common raised terrace, with a tank and fountain between them. The mosque has a rectangular prayer-chamber, with a facade of five arches, shaded by the chhajja and a slender minaret at each corner. Enclosed within a square fenestration rises the bulbous dome with a row of tall petals at its base. The square tomb with double aisles around it, the inner one pillared, has similar features but is finer in proportions. Two narrow arches, next to the ones at each end, break up its facade. On the interior, each wall has three arches, all panelled and embellished with floral, arabesque or inscriptional traceries. The tomb-chamber has a low curved ceiling made of joggled masonry, with empty space between it and the dome.

The Ibrahim-Rauza, built by Ibrahim ‘Adil Shah II (1580-1627). Ibrahim Adil Shah II was king of the Sultanate of Bijapur and a member of the Adil Shahi dynasty. Under his reign the dynasty had its greatest period as he extended its frontier as far south as Mysore. He was a skilful administrator, artist, poet and a generous patron of the arts. He reverted to the Sunni sect of Islam, but remained tolerant of other religions, including Christianity. After his reign, increasing weakness permitted Mughal encroachment and the successful revolt of the Maratha king Shivaji, who killed the Bijapur general Afzal Khan and scattered his army. The dynasty left a tradition of cosmopolitan culture and artistic patronage whose architectural remains are to be seen in the capital city of Bijapur.

The Malik e Maidan also known as the Burj-E-Sherz is said to be the largest weapon ever built in medieval times. The muzzle of the cannon has been fashioned into the shape of a lion head with open jaws, and between the jaws are inscribed elephants to make it look like the lion is devouring the elephant. It is made of a cast of alloy of copper, iron and tin. The interesting thing about the cannon is that its surface does not get hot even under the blazing sun and when struck sounds like a bell. The outside surface of the cannon is dark green and polished like glass with numerous inscriptions in Arabic and Persian. An inscription on the cannon about its creation states that it was built by Muhammad-bin-Hasan Rumi, a Turkish officer in the service of the king of Ahmednagar in the year 1549. Another inscprition inscribed on King Auranzeb’s command says that the Bijapur had been taken and the gun subdued by the emperor in 1686. When the fort of Parnadah where this gun was installed, fell into hands of Bijapur, General Murari Pandit brought the gun to Bijapur as a trophy of war and set it up on the present bastion. It is believed that the legendary cannon always remains cool and tinkles like a bell on tapping. The nozzle of the gun is shaped like the head of a lion with open jaws. Between the carved fangs of the lion is depicted an elephant being crushed to death. On top of the cannon is present an inscription commissioned by Aurangzeb.

It was built in 1549 by Ali Adil Shah I and was considered as a war trophy. It is 4.45 metres long, has a diameter of 1.5 metres and weighs 55 tons. The cannon is sitting on top of the Sherzah Burj facing west towards the plains outside the city. This cannon was surrounded by a darbar hall and many royal residences of the Adil kings.

The Malik e Maidan also known as the Burj-E-Sherz is said to be the largest weapon ever built in medieval times. The muzzle of the cannon has been fashioned into the shape of a lion head with open jaws, and between the jaws are inscribed elephants to make it look like the lion is devouring the elephant. It is made of a cast of alloy of copper, iron and tin. The interesting thing about the cannon is that its surface does not get hot even under the blazing sun and when struck sounds like a bell. The outside surface of the cannon is dark green and polished like glass with numerous inscriptions in Arabic and Persian. An inscription on the cannon about its creation states that it was built by Muhammad-bin-Hasan Rumi, a Turkish officer in the service of the king of Ahmednagar in the year 1549. Another inscprition inscribed on King Auranzeb’s command says that the Bijapur had been taken and the gun subdued by the emperor in 1686. When the fort of Parnadah where this gun was installed, fell into hands of Bijapur, General Murari Pandit brought the gun to Bijapur as a trophy of war and set it up on the present bastion. It is believed that the legendary cannon always remains cool and tinkles like a bell on tapping. The nozzle of the gun is shaped like the head of a lion with open jaws. Between the carved fangs of the lion is depicted an elephant being crushed to death. On top of the cannon is present an inscription commissioned by Aurangzeb.
