Daroji Bear Sanctuary, Hampi

India /Karnataka /Bellary /Hampi

Daroji Bear Sanctuary is Situated only 15 kilometers from Hampi. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Daroji Bear Sanctuary leads you through a narrow passage marked by a stone gateway, surrounded on both sides with dense vegetation to an observatory tower from where you catch a glimpse of the sanctuary’s star residents, Sloth Bears. Built in 1994 on a landscape that was replete with boulders, rocks and some more boulders, over the years the forest department has managed to transform it to an actual sanctuary where not only Sloth Bears, but also mongoose, wild boars, hyenas, leopards, jackals, the ever elusive pangolin and the skittish peafowls flourish. A veritable Bear heaven, all the wild fruit bearing trees that Sloth bears like to feast on are planted across the sanctuary in addition to orchards of custard apple, mango, Singapore cherry and many other fruits and of course, honey and termites, provided in bulk to the bears. While you will not be allowed to roam around in the sanctuary, you can spot the bears from the observatory basking in the sun with their tummies full of honey and fruits. Try to contain your excitement and not shriek as you spots bears and other residents of the sanctuary. That is only going to disturb and scare them off. There is a possibility you may not get to sight the bears instantly. Have patience, as the observatory overlooks a clearing where the bears in tow with dawdling cubs come out to bask and snooze.

Detail InformationEdit

Underground Shiva Temple is dedicated for Lord Siva was built many meters below the ground level. For this reason, almost all the time the sanctum and the core parts of the temple are under water, restricting entry to the inner areas. A water canal system too is visible around the main temple. But this canal is dry and you can walk down to a point from where it’s impossible to go further. There is a small temple for Siva’s consort too near the mail shrine. The Kalyanamantapa (ceremonial marriage hall) is a great looking structure. It has been believed that this is one of the oldest temples in Hampi. View of the main hall in front of the shrine. The main tower too can be seen Your entry to the temple passes through the main tower in front of the temple campus. It looks like this tower was an addition done later on and was never completed. A series of wide large steps along the axis of the tower and the sanctum leads you to the inner part of the temple. The main hall in front of the shrine is huge with massive cubical pillars supporting the roof. The lamppost actually protrudes through the roof. Depending upon the water level you may be able to proceed to the sanctum area.

Purandaradasa Mantapa is situated near the Vijaya Vitthala temple. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Purandaradasa Mantapa is a small open pillared pavilion with whitewashed top dedicated to the legendary poet Purandaradasa who lived in Hampi. The pavilion is located at the river shore near Vittala Temple. This is one of the areas at Hampi where people perform religious rituals. The pavilion is almost at the edge of the river that during monsoon the river water touches the platform or even submerges it. Probably it is here the poet would have sat and composed the devotional songs. Even today the songs composed by him are sung at the Carnatic music (the south Indian classical music) concerts. It is believed that he has composed more than 75,000 classical compositions. They were carried over generations by the oral tradition. But today only a about a thousand or so are known to exist. A small sclpture of Purandaradasa with tambura ( an ancient stringed musical instrument ) can be seen at the pavillion.
