St Stephen’s Church has a fascinating Gothic structure which still retains its Victorian feel. The entire structure is made of wood, its carvings and architecture wonderfully done. Owing to the woodwork, it remains pleasantly cool all the time. It is said that the wood was acquired from Tipu Sultan’s palace in the colonial times in 1829, the year of its establishment. Dating back to 19th century, its foundation stone was laid by Stephen Rumbold Lushington. He was the Governor of Madras at the time and was keen on having a church built in the precincts of Ooty. The construction of St Stephen’s Church started on April 23, 1829, the birthday of King George IV, while it was laid open for public on Easter Sunday in 1831. The painting that depicts The Last Supper is a major draw here, while the stained glass windows are a different lure altogether.

Bheemili, also known as Bhimlipatam or ‘Bheemunipatnam’, derives its name from the popular mythological character Bheema (one of the five Pandavas), who killed Bakasura here. Hindustan Photo Film or HPF is a public sector enterprise and the chief industrial unit of the district. It is covers a wide spread area of 300 acres. This plant is situated close to the Ooty-Mysore road and the golf links. Tourists visit this firm to catch glimpse of the entire production process. In January, 1967, this industrial plant was officially inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Currently, the plant produces various types of Indu roll films that are helpful in taking photographs. The unit also produces Indu bromide papers that are used for printing the photographs. This unit also specialises in producing the best quality Indu X-ray films. In addition, industrial X-ray film, Induaerographic for defence and geological mapping, CAT film and oscilloscope direct print papers are produced in this unit. Laser recording film, photo typesetting paper, chemicals for film processing and special film for space photography can also be found here. This company is equipped with the latest technology for manufacturing graphic arts, medical X-ray and black & white products, conforming to the international quality standards.
