Bahubali, Dharmasthala

India/Karnataka /Dakshina Kannada /Dharmasthala

Bahubali is situated on the top of the Ratnagiri Hill at a kilometre from the bus stand on the west and a kilometre from the Manjunatha temple from east, Dharmasthala, Karnataka, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Bahubali is a shrine around 39-foot high, and respected as a figure of sacrifice and selflessness, by Jains. Bahubali and his elder brother Bharatha, were both prince, who contested against each other in a war to gain supremacy. When Bahubali won the battle, he spared his brother’s life but realised the pointlessness of a killing and war in order to gain power. He gave up his kingdom to Bharatha and joined the Digambara Jain sect. From then on Bahubali followed the way to atonement by standing unclothed until he achieved enlightenment. Even the shrine of Bahubali is depicted in this posture. By climbing steps of the hill for about 20 minutes or by road, this shrine can be reached. The best time for the tourists to visit this temple is in the morning to get away from humidity and sunny weather. On top of the hill, there are shelters and drinking water facilities being arranged for travellers.

Detail InformationEdit

Ethipothala Waterfalls is a union of three minor rivers, namely the Tummala Vagu, Chandravanka Vagu and Nakkala Vagu a tributary of the River Krishna. It is 70 feet (21 m) high river cascade. This cascade is actually a mountain stream that plunges down 22 metres to form a serene lagoon at the foot of the hill. The river then joins the Krishna river after the dam after traveling about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from the falls. A strategic view point was created by Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department from the adjacent hillock. There are Ranganatha and Dattatreya temples in the vicinity. There is a crocodile breeding centre in the lagoon formed by the falls. The lagoons around the cascade are used for crocodile breeding programme run by the Forest Department of Andhra Pradesh. Ethipothala is home to two beautiful temples, which are located close to the waterfall. The temples of Ranganatha and Dattareyaswamy are situated in a valley surrounded by lush green forest. Adjacent to the waterfall, there is a network of caves that extends all the way to Srisailam. The waterfall is a sight to behold in the evenings, after the sun sets, as the colourful lights decorating the fall come to life and give an astonishing view of the spellbinding beauty of the cascade and its surroundings. Close to Ethipothala, there are many historic Buddhist sites that are worth exploring.
