Patal Bhairav Temple Malwa, Ujjain. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Patal Bhairav Temple is dedicated to the Shakti (power) of the mother Goddess namely, Patal Bhairav. Temple has an interesting legend behind it. As per Hindu mythology, a cruel and selfish demon, Bhairav Nath chased a young lady named Vaishno Devi, the reincarnation of Mother Goddess. In order to flee, the Devi shot an arrow in the ground from where water rushed out and took shelter in a cave. However, Devi had to assume the form of Mahakali to kill Bhairav after he found her. Just before dying, Bhairav begged for pardon and was granted Moksha along with a boon wherein each one of the devotees after the darshan of the Mother Goddess at the Holy cave, have to visit the nearby temple of Bhairav Nath in order to fulfill their pilgrimage.

HistoryEdit

Bhairav or Kaal Bhairav is an important deity of Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. It is a fierce attribute of Shiva associated with destruction. As per Shiva Purana, Brahma arrogantly asks Vishnu to worship him as he is the supreme creator. This angers Shiva and he thereby severs Brahma’s fifth head. Thereafter Brahma had only four heads. So Shiva in the form of Kaal Bhairav is depicted as carrying Brahma’s fifth head. To ward off his sin of Brahmahathya dosha (killing a Brahman), Shiva wanders as a sanyasi (seer) carrying Brahma’s skull as a begging bowl for 12 years. Kaal Bhairav also guards the Shakti peethas and most of the Dwadasha linga temples have the deity Kaal bhairav. Kaal Bhairav is worshipped by Kapalikas and Aghori sects of Shaivism and has Dog (shvana) as his vahana or vehicle. His consort is Bhairavi, an attribute of Kali. Kaal Bhairav is adorned with serpents as anklets, yajnopavitha (sacred thread), bracelet and ear rings. He wears tiger skin and has human skulls as ritual apron. The great guru Adi Shankaracharya has written Bhairavaashtakam on Kaal Bhairav.

Meera Temple, Chittorgarh Fort Village, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Meera Temple is a shrine associated with Meera Bai, who was a Rajput princess. She gave up all the luxuries of royal life, and spent her whole life in devotion to Lord Krishna. Meera Bai had spent her life singing bhajans and songs in praise of Lord Krishna. The Meera Temple is an excellent specimen of the Rajputana style of architecture. It is situated close to Kumbha Shyam Temple. North Indian style has been followed while constructing the temple. It has four pavilions in the open gallery encircling the shrine. Several striking and lively paintings of Meera and Lord Krishna adorn the interiors of the temple.
