Sultan Battery is one of the most prominent places of interest in Mangalore. The importance of this place of the city is that it bears testimony of the historical events that have taken place at this place. The Sultan Battery of Mangalore is actually a watchtower, which is located at a place called Boloor. Sultan Battery at Mangalore is made up of special type of stones, which are termed ‘black stones’. Tippu Sultan constructed the Sultan Battery in Mangalore for some important contemporary political reasons. He wanted to stop the naval vessels from stepping into a river called the River Gurpur. For this reason, he constructed the massive structure of the Sultan Battery as a barrier for the naval vessels. The entire structure does not exist any more, though a portion of the fort is still preserved for the tourists, so that they can get a glimpse of this historic monument. The existing portion of the Sultan Battery is called Tippu’s Well. The place where this fort stands is today completely forsaken.

Rosario Cathedral had always faced threats and its soul always outlived the threats and damages. The building as completely squandered by Tipu Sultan’s forces in 1784 as it was a church started by a foreign force. The Cathedral has a dome and the cross on the dome was lit every night serving as a beacon for seafarers. It is also believed that the image of Virgin Mary on the altar was found by the fishermen when it got caught in the net. There is a lot of history attached to this and it makes a place worth visiting once.

HistoryEdit

Rosario Cathedral was built in 1568 by the Portuguese. The oldest church was renovated in 1910 in Roman design of architecture. It is near a place called Hampankatta in Mangalore city in a calm and silent locality. In the year 1910 the parish priest by the name Fr.H.I. Busoni demolished the old building and started the work on a new structure. The cathedral also runs a high school called Rosario High School. It also runs St. Vincent Paul society meant for the upliftment of the poor and the downtrodden.

Situated at Belvai, near Moodabidri at the foothills of the Western Ghats, the park is a treasure house of a wide variety of butterflies belonging to this region. The park is developed on natural greenery and the butterflies are also natural inhabitants of the park. The park respects the butterfly’s freedom and no dome or enclosure is maintained to keep them trapped within the park. Only suitable conditions which are conducive to different varieties of butterflies are created to attract them to the park. The park is being run with service motive and is not a commercial undertaking.

Kudupu Sri Anantha Padmanabha Temple is dedicated to Lord Anantha Padmanabha, another name of Lord Vishnu. Kudupu Sri Anantha Padmanabha Temple is well-known for serpent worship. Main deity Lord Anantha Padmanabha is facing towards the west. Naga Bana (hundreds of serpent idols) though situated in eastern part of the temple it is also facing towards west. The temple at Kudupu also houses a holy pond “Bhadra Saraswathi Thirtha” which is situated left side of the temple. A small shrine dedicated to Sub-deity Jarandaya can be found opposite to the temple. Goddess Shree Devi, Lord Mahaganapathi Lord Subramanya, Jaya and Vijaya are main sub-deities of the temple. The shrines of Ayyappa and Navagraha along with Valmika Mantapa are located outside the temple. Annual festival Shashti, which falls in December is a famous religious ceremony is celebrated here with great devotion. Nagarapanchami, a worship of sacrificing the milk to Lord Naga is another festival is celebrated which attracts a large number of devotees.

The chapel, built in 1885 by Rev Father Joseph Willy, intimately matches the world renowned Sistine Chapel at Rome. The chapel is spectacular with some magnificent paintings on the ceiling, fresco painting and oil canvas paintings. The ceiling is decorated with paintings including the portraits of the Crowing of the Cock and many saints. Kadri Hill Park is the largest park within city limits of Mangalore. Consisting of a well-maintained animal conservatory, it comes under the Government Horticulture Department. In the animal conservatory, various kinds of reptiles and rare species of birds, along with sambars, anteaters and many other animals. As per the belief of local population, eight tanks of water located within the park have the potential to cure skin diseases. In the park are also found children train, and other facilities. Light house hill offer an amazing view of natural beauty, sun setting and sailing ships. This 18th century historic spot was believed to be built by Haider Ali. There is a public library at the base of the light house with a reading room named after Karnad Sadashiv Rao, a renowned freedom fighter. The light house is surrounded by a picturesque garden known as Tagore Park with green sceneries and plants and flowers. It is a favourite hangout of the tourists specially among the youngsters. St. Aloysius College of Institutions, Aloysius Chapel and an Islam Historical Idgah mosque can be watched from here.
