Attara Kacheri, the Karnataka High Court, was constructed during the reign of Tipu Sultan. Earlier an old public office, it was named Attara Kacheri, meaning eighteen departments. The two-storey structure was built of red bricks in Greco-Roman (neo-classical) architecture. Ceiling of the Central Hall of the building is adorned with portraits of Sir Mark Cubbon, Commissioner of Mysore (1834 to 1861). Instituted in 1884 under the Mysore High Court Act, it was known as the Mysore High Court till 1973. Moreover, the expansive premises comprise various Corinthian columns in symmetry. Located opposite to the Vidhana Soudha, Attara Kacheri beautifully, depicts the Gothic architecture. Public Library, Venkatappa Art Gallery, Visveswaraya Industrial & Technological Museum and Government Museums are the highlights of this tourist attraction.

Seshadri Iyer Memorial Hall is a famous tourist site known especially for the classic European construction which pushes it to the top in the list of places to visit in Bangalore. It was built in memory of K.Sheshadri Iyer who was Mysore state’s Dewan for 18 long years from 1883. It was built by Lord Curzon who was the British viceroy in honor of sincerity and efficiency, Sri Sheshadri Iyer showed in his service as Dewan. The building of Seshadri Iyer hall is situated in Cubban Park which is in the central administrative area of the city of Bangalore. The building carved out in red with a beautiful rose garden in the frontage is envied for its artistic and lustful natural beauty. The site is also a reader’s paradise as the building has a library with a vast collection of 2.65 lakh books ranging from the year 0830 – 1900. The legendary building occupies about 300 sq. km.

Bejai Museum, also known as Seemanthi Bai Government Museum. Taxi : White Ambassador Cabs/Indicas are available: usually used by passengers on long-haul routes. Shared cabs are also available for travel between the city and other talukas viz. Bantwal (BC Road), etc. Prepaid cabs are available from the airport to the city: this is generally at a flat rate of ₹350-400. You can also call Cel Cabs and they will pick you up in 20 minutes from wherever you are. You can hold it for a day or a few hours. You can reach them on 60609090.

Bus : There are Three bus stands in Mangalore for long-distance bus services. One is the state-run KSRTC bus-stand in Bejai, located towards the North of the city, but not far off from the city centre. The bus-services are run by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. Services run by the Kerala State Transport and Tamil Nadu State Transport and Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation also call in Mangalore at this very bus-stand. The other one is behind the Town Hall. It is known as the ‘State Bank’ stand by the locals, because of its proximity to a branch of the State Bank of India. It is the last stop for most of the private bus services to Mangalore (mostly Inter-District viz. Mangalore-Udupi and Inter-taluk buses).
There is a third bus-stand (not exactly a bus-stand but an alighting point for passengers) in front of Milagres Church where most private tour and bus operators: Ideal Travels, Canara, Canara-Pinto, Vishal Travels, Anand Travels, VRL etc. have their offices.

Train : Mangalore has two major railway stations. First is Mangalore Central (IR station code : MAQ) is located at Hampankatta, in the heart of the city. It is a terminus and is used only by the trains which terminate at Mangalore. And second is Mangalore Junction (IR station code : MAJN) is situated in Kankanady, about 5 km from the city centre. Most long-distance trains and all trains not terminating at Mangalore stop at this station. Use Mangalore Central Station whenever possible as there is a prepaid rickshaw counter there. Autorickshaw drivers at Mangalore Junction rip people off.

Air : Mangalore International Airport, Bajpe, about 20 km from the city centre. Air India, Jet Airways, Spicejet, and Air India Express currently operate flights to Mangalore. From airport taxies, autorickshaws and buses are availble to reach the destination.

Others : By Autorickshaws : Autorickshaws are available all throughout Mangalore City, the starting fare is ₹25. Pre-paid autos were available from the City Railway Station and the KSRTC bus stand at Bejai, but not any more. Autos also ply to far-off destinations, the outskirts, for one-and-a-half times the actual fare; this is roughly around ₹150.

Famous as Kadali Yogishwar Mutt, its presiding deity is Kala Bhairava, a frightening form blended of the features of Lord Shiva, Durga and Agni. Taxi : White Ambassador Cabs/Indicas are available: usually used by passengers on long-haul routes. Shared cabs are also available for travel between the city and other talukas viz. Bantwal (BC Road), etc. Prepaid cabs are available from the airport to the city: this is generally at a flat rate of ₹350-400. You can also call Cel Cabs and they will pick you up in 20 minutes from wherever you are. You can hold it for a day or a few hours. You can reach them on 60609090.

Bus : There are Three bus stands in Mangalore for long-distance bus services. One is the state-run KSRTC bus-stand in Bejai, located towards the North of the city, but not far off from the city centre. The bus-services are run by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. Services run by the Kerala State Transport and Tamil Nadu State Transport and Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation also call in Mangalore at this very bus-stand. The other one is behind the Town Hall. It is known as the ‘State Bank’ stand by the locals, because of its proximity to a branch of the State Bank of India. It is the last stop for most of the private bus services to Mangalore (mostly Inter-District viz. Mangalore-Udupi and Inter-taluk buses).
There is a third bus-stand (not exactly a bus-stand but an alighting point for passengers) in front of Milagres Church where most private tour and bus operators: Ideal Travels, Canara, Canara-Pinto, Vishal Travels, Anand Travels, VRL etc. have their offices.

Train : Mangalore has two major railway stations. First is Mangalore Central (IR station code : MAQ) is located at Hampankatta, in the heart of the city. It is a terminus and is used only by the trains which terminate at Mangalore. And second is Mangalore Junction (IR station code : MAJN) is situated in Kankanady, about 5 km from the city centre. Most long-distance trains and all trains not terminating at Mangalore stop at this station. Use Mangalore Central Station whenever possible as there is a prepaid rickshaw counter there. Autorickshaw drivers at Mangalore Junction rip people off.

Air : Mangalore International Airport, Bajpe, about 20 km from the city centre. Air India, Jet Airways, Spicejet, and Air India Express currently operate flights to Mangalore. From airport taxies, autorickshaws and buses are availble to reach the destination.

Others : By Autorickshaws : Autorickshaws are available all throughout Mangalore City, the starting fare is ₹25. Pre-paid autos were available from the City Railway Station and the KSRTC bus stand at Bejai, but not any more. Maha Maya Temple in Mangalore is one of the oldest temples devoted to the worship of Shakti. This temple has also Lord Shrinivasa, Lord Venkatramana, Shri Raktheshwari Amma, Shri Mahalaxmi, Shri Chandramauleshwar & Shri Mahalasa Narayani as other deities. The tank in front of the temple, called Shri Mahamaya Tirtha, is the largest tank in the city. It attracts crowds of devotees to witness the immersion of clay idols of Ganesha during Ganesh Chathurthi & Sharada during Navratri Festival.

HistoryEdit

The idol of Shri Mahamaya Amma was brought from Kudtheri village of Goa during the early days of 16th Century A.D. by GSB community who had to leave Goa due to Portuguese atrocities. Since then, the temple is serving the spiritual and religious needs of the community.
