Catalina Station (CS), additionally called Steward Observatory Catalina Station, is associate degree astronomical perceptive facility placed on Mount Bigelow within the Santa Catalina Mountains some twenty nine kilometers (18 mi) northeast of metropolis, Arizona, within the u. The cesium web site was selected by Gerard P. Kuiper of the satellite and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) at UA in 1960. He believed that a rather higher location than associate degree alternate web site at Kitt Peak National Observatory would be higher for LPL’s functions, and Mt. Bigelow was each higher and simply accessible from UA via the Catalina main road. Construction began in late 1962 and also the 1st telescope, a 21-inch reflector, began in operation in early 1963.
