Museums The most important sight of Kisvárda is the castle, the ancient home of the Várdays. The construction of the castle began in the days of István Várdai, Archbishop of Kalocsa. In the course of the centuries it was reconstructed several times, always according to the taste of actual owner. For a period in the 18th century the archives of the county were stored here. From the second half of the century the castle was exposed to gradual decay. In 1957-61 the National Superintendence of Historic Buildings had it restored. Since 1990, as an outstanding historic building, it has been a part of the National Heritage. In the museum of stonework on the first floor we find the red marble tomb of Anna Telegdy (István Nyáry’s wife), and fragments of 15th-century sculptures that used to stand on the wall of Catholic Church and in the town mansion of the Várdais.
