A charming walled city which is full with romance, Cartagena monuments within the narrow streets include churches, ancient monasteries, battlements and historic heroic remains. The original colonial walled city and the fortress are a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site which had historically once served an important role in development during the Spanish era. Facing the Caribbean Sea on the northern coast, this most visited Colombian city was one of the first sanctuaries of the African slaves freed in the Americas. Although Cartagena today is predominantly ethnic, it however features a healthy mix of culture and entertainment with countless choices and flavors in local and international styles.
With several cultural festivals, an intense nightlife, wonderful food, exotic beaches, superb scenery alongside a wide choice of hotels and tourist infrastructure, Cartagena no wonder has proved to be a tourist delight. Some of the favorite attractions in and around Cartagena include the Islas del Rosario, India Catalina, Steps of Mount La Popa, Casatillo de San Felipe de Barajas, the Cartagena Gold Museum, Las Bovedas, Palace of the Inquisition and the Playa Blanca located on the Baru Island.
