Cancun is a city of international tourism development certified by the UNWTO (World Tourism Organization). Located on the northeast coast of Quintana Roo in southern Mexico, more than 1,700 km from Mexico City, the Project began operations in 1974 as Integrally Planned Center, a pioneer of FONATUR (Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo, National Fund for Tourism Development), formerly known as INFRATUR. There are two possible translations of cancun, based on the Mayan pronunciation. The first translation is nest of snakes or pot. The second version and less accepted is place of the golden snake. The island of Cancun has a form of the numeral 7 and in the light of dawn resembles a golden serpent.
