Canby’s Cross is found in volcanic rock Beds memorial, regarding three miles south of Tule Lake, and five miles sou’-sou’-west of the city of Tulelake, California. It had been erected to commemorate General Canby’s death at a peace gathering. General Canby was shot within the face by Captain Jack of the Modoc tribe United Nations agency was later hanged for the killing.
The cross reads: information Canby USA was dead here by the Modocs Apr eleven, 1873.
