Camp Nelson National burial ground may be a us National burial ground placed in southern common jasmine County, Kentucky. It absolutely was originally a burial ground related to the U.S. Army’s Camp Nelson, that was active throughout the U.S. Warfare and its aftermath. The camp was named for Major General William “Bull” Nelson, commander of the warfare Army of KY, WHO was dead by a fellow officer in 1862.

There ar two,452 burials that date to the U.S. Civil War, and of these, 837 ar famed to be the graves of African-American troopers. Their stone ar marked with the letters “USCT” over their names; the designation stands for “United States coloured Troops”.
The burial ground was created in 1863 as an area to bury Union troopers WHO died whereas serving in and around Camp Nelson throughout the warfare. The primary burial ground was placed close to the camp hospital, and 379 individuals were buried there between Gregorian calendar month 1863 and Gregorian calendar month 1865. A plot of land for the second burial ground, selected “Graveyard No. 2”, was selected , and is currently at the core of this national burial ground. There have been one,183 troopers and connected civilian staff buried there between the summer of 1865 and Gregorian calendar month 1866.
