Detail InformationEdit
This Church is the oldest sacred building for miles around. It is said to stand on the foundations of a Celtic cult site and on the earthworks of a fort that the Romans built.
The interior you see today is mainly of the year 1969: The high altar is made of stone and adorned with a life-sized Crucifixion Scene in Baroque style. In the course of the renovation works a frieze, depicting the depicting the Magi at the stable of Bethlehem with the Archangel Michael towering above it all, was exposed.
The most striking and noticeable feature of the Church is to be found in a tiny annex to the northern wall: Probably ever since the year 1719 a movable Lent Crèche, lovingly dubbed “”WERKL””, is installed during the Holy Week above the Sepulcher that is adorned with colorful glass balls. The living scene is mounted on a revolving stage and shows two 20 centimeters tall figures that are carved and painted in vernacular Baroque style. The elaborate Crèche shows the Five Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary with unique audio visual effects. The “”WERKL”” is operated by a clock mechanism that is powered with an outdoor weight and pulley system.
