The city of Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic with almost 400,000 inhabitants, lies in the centre of Europe. Other important large European cities can be found within a radius of 120 to 200 km from Brno: Prague, Vienna and Bratislava. Regular connections fly from international airports to Brno.
Brno boasts several monuments, which are testament to its wealth of history stretching back over eight centuries. The historical centre of the city is an urban monument reservation. The city made its mark on European history during the Thirty Years’ War, when it was the only city in Central Europe to resist siege by the Swedish armies. This was followed by a dynamic boom and in the 18th and 19th century, production of textiles and engineering were dominant. Brno gained the modern face of a large city thanks to functionalist architecture. The most important works include the complex of the Brno Exhibition Grounds established in 1928 and the famed Tugendhat Villa dating back to 1930, included in the UNESCO World cultural heritage list.
Nowadays Brno is a city of universities, home to the highest-level judicial authorities and other important institutions, a centre for trade, business, culture, sports and also science, research and innovation. Brno is a metropolis in Moravia and starting point for tourists who wish to get to know the natural and cultural beauties of the region of South Moravia. The protected area of Moravian Karst begins north of Brno and to the south, vineyards stretch out with their stylish wine cellars. The city is surrounded with beautiful mixed forests, which offer many opportunities for hiking and cycling. Cultural events are held every year in the city as are festivals (e.g. Brno – a City in the Heart of Europe with the Ignis Brunensis firework show) and important sporting events (Road Bike Grand Prix). Modern shopping and entertainment centres can also be found in Brno.
