The Blue Barn Theatre, located at 614 S 11th Street in Omaha, Nebraska, is a nationally recognized theater.Begun in 1989, the theater was founded by a group of recent graduates from the theater program at Purchase College: Kevin Lawler, Hughston Walkinshaw, and Nils Haaland.The theater was started at the invite of the Bemis Center For Contemporary Arts, with whom the theater initially shared a space.The Blue Barn has primarily presented the works of contemporary American playwrights, including David Mamet, Sam Shepherd, Christopher Durang, and Lanford Wilson. The theater has also acted as a showcase for Omaha-based playwrights, such as Tim Siragusa, Robert Vivian, and Max Sparber. The theater often shares castmembers with Omaha-born filmmaker Alexander Payne, who has been a longtime supporter of the theater, volunteering to be interviewed on the stage of the Omaha Community Playhouse by theater cofounder Hughston Walkinshaw as a fundraising effort in 2002.
