Bishnupur is a town that is located in the state of Manipur in the Bishnupur district. It is a popular tourist town in the state and there are many attractive sites that are available here. The tourist places include lakes, temples and other sites. There are various picnic spots that are located in and around the town and the main one is the island of Sendra. The island is present in a large fresh water lake and this is an ideal place for families to visit. One can see islands of weeds floating around and there is a bungalow that is present in the island as well. The island is situated at a distance of around 48 kilometers from the town of Bishnupur and is a good place for a day trip. One can also visit the Keibul Lamjao National Park. It is located on the Loktak Lake and one has to travel a distance of 40 kilometers from the town to reach the place. The park is home to the Manipur Eld Deer. Another important tourist center is the Ebudhou Thangjing Temple. During the month of May, you can witness the Moirang Lai Haraoba festival. The month long festival includes many dances and singing events. The town of Bishnupur has a varied climate and the conditions are wet for around eight months of the year.

The original name of Bishnupur was Lumlangdong (now Lamangdong) . History recorded the facts of its origin. As soon as Kyamba ascended throne of Manipur in 1467 A.D he conquered Kyang, which was a Shan kingdom in the Kabow Valley. Then he assumed the name of Kyamba which means the conquerer of Kyang. There always had been a good relation between the Pongs and the Meities. During the reign of Kyamba also there was good relations between Kyamba and the Pong King Khe-Khomba. Actually it was the good foreign policy of King Kyamba that he was able to have a good relation with the neighbouring countries.thousands of pilgrims have been coming to this temple. Bishnupur is also called the town of temples .There are several terracotta temples built by the Malla Kings. The administrative headquarter of Bishnupur district is Bishnupur itself. The sex ratio in Bishnupur is strong with 984 females per 1000 males.

By Air : The closest airport is situated at Imphal, which is at a distance of approximately 35 kilometers from the town of Bishnupur. There are frequent flights to the airport from places such as Aizwal Kolkata, Delhi and Silchar. This is the only option for those who wish to travel by air. Taxis are available at the airport and this is the easiest way to reach the town from the airport and they charge around Rs 7 per kilometer.

By Train : There are no major railway stations in the state and one has to travel to the Dimapur railway station and opt for a taxi to reach the town. Trains are generally comfortable and tickets are affordable as well. The station is situated at a distance of 215 kilometers from the city of Imphal.

By BUS : Buses are available from the city of Imphal to the town of Bishnupur as well. Tickets are cheap and cost around Rs 40.

By Taxi : The town is situated at a distance of 27 kilometers from the city of Imphal and one can reach the place easily using taxis.

Bishnupur Mela ; Venue:  Bishnupur Mela ; Period :  December ; Details:  A weeklong festival in Bishnupur is called “Bishnupur Mela” in the month of December. An annual festival in Bishnupur referred to as Jhapan is famous for dance and fight of snakes to delight the goddess Mansa. It’s mostly celebrated in August.
