Bihar Sharif is located in the Nalanda district, in the Indian state of Bihar, which is very famous among tourists from all over the world for housing the world’s oldest university. You can visit the ruins of the Nalanda University during your trip to Bihar Sharif too. Constructed by Ashoka the Great, this structure was destroyed in the 12th century by Bakhtiyar Khilji. The climate in Bihar Sharif can be classified as sub tropical. October and November are the post monsoon months, and this is a very good time to visit Bihar Sharif.

Bihar Sharif has several mosques and Muslim tombs, the best-known being the tomb of Malik Ibrahim Baya Atop Pir Pahadi Hill. Nearby lie the remains of Odantapuri, a great vihara, or college of Buddhist learning, from which the name Bihar was derived. In 1869 the city was constituted a municipality. It is now a road and rail hub, as well as an agricultural trade centre. It has several colleges affiliated with Magadh University at Bodh Gaya. Nalanda, a Buddhist monastic centre, lies southwest of Bihar-sharif. Bihar Sharif, also spelled Biharsharif, also called Bihar, city, central Bihar state, northeastern India, located east of the Paimar River, a tributary of the Ganges (Ganga) River. It served as the capital of the Pala dynasty . Nearby lie the remains of Odantapuri, a great vihara, or college of Buddhist learning, from which the name Bihar was derived. By Air : Flights can be taken to the nearest airport located in the city of Patna, from where buses to Bihar Sharif can be taken. Regular flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Lucknow, Kolkata and Ranchi will be available. Fares from Delhi to Patna will range around Rs 4,000 to 6,000.

By Train : The town of Bihar Sharif has a railway station that is well connected to many important destinations through trains. Trains can be taken to the city of New Delhi, and to the city of Howrah. You can also opt for trains to Una, Danapur and Rajgir. Train fares will be cheaper than bus fares, but tickets need to be booked well in advance. Regular trains will be available from New Delhi to Bihar Sharif, as the Shramjevi Express runs through this route daily. Fares from New Delhi to Bihar Sharif will range around Rs 371 for the basic class of travel. Air conditioned coaches will charge Rs 2,269 per trip.

By BUS : Bus is the most common means of transport from the nearby cities and towns. Bus fare is around Rs 2- 4 per km.

Sonepur Cattle Fair ; Venue:  Sonepur, Bihar ; Period :  November ; Details:  The Sonepur Cattle Fair or Malegaon Mela is held on Kartik Poornima (the full moon day) in the month of November in Sonepur, Bihar, on the confluence of river Ganges and Gandak. It is also known as Harihar Kshetra Mela and it attracts visitors from all over Asia. Till date, it is the biggest cattle fair of Asia and stretches on from fifteen days to one month. It has its origins during ancient times. This is when Chandragupta Maurya used to buy elephants and horses across the river Ganges. The Sonepur Cattle Fair once used to attract traders from places as distant as Central Asia.
