The Big Four Bridge is AN abandoned six-span railroad span that crosses the river, connecting Louisville, Kentucky, and Jeffersonville, Indiana, us. It had been completed in 1895, and updated in 1929. It’s its largest span at 547 feet (167 m), for 2,525 feet (770 m) in total. It gets its name from the defunct Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Gladiator Railway, that was nicknamed the “Big Four Railroad”.
Access to the massive Four Bridge is presently restricted, because the access ways in which onto the bridge for the final public were removed in 1969, earning the massive Four Bridge the nickname “Bridge That Goes Nowhere”. The bridge is presently being reborn into a bicycle/pedestrian crossing. The Saint George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge downstream, that carries U.S. Thirty one across the stream, is presently the sole bridge permitting bicyclists and pedestrians travel between Louisville and its Hoosier State suburbs of latest Albany, Clarksville, and Jeffersonville.
